April 12, 2014

It seems like only yesterday that we were 10 years old and hanging out at Meadowbrook Park. When we were at Sam Houston, I sparred several rounds with him for a column I was writing about him for the school newspaper. He talked me into joining Golden Gloves and I did fight in a handful of tournaments over a two-year period with him in my corner. One day he noticed that I was using some of my mother's makeup to cover a black eye that I'd received in the Northeast Lions Club Tournament. He reached over a wiped it of my face saying, "Never be ashamed of a black eye; it's proof that you had the guts to step into the ring, something most people are afraid to even do."
Years later, he and I were the only ones to lay our hands on every log when he was building his home at the "Garden of Eden."
One of my best friends ever... I miss him more than I can say. Rest in Peace, brother. Amen.

In 1971 while I was in Vietnam waiting to us the phone to call home I picked up a boxing magazine that included an article on Tommy. I had met Tommy years earlier during the time my brother Bobby was boxing. Over the years I got to know Tommy more and always had a great respect for him. He was someone I admired. I'm so glad to have known you. Thanks for the memories. You will never be forgotten.
