Boyd Holliman Obituary

Holliman Mr. Boyd William Holliman. "We have known so much of happiness, We have shared our hours of joy; And memory is one gift of God, Death cannot destroy." Mr. Boyd William Holliman took his first breath on November 28, 1926 in Columbus, Ohio and departed his family, friends and community on April 17, 2016. During his early childhood, Boyd gave his life to Christ. He attended and was a life long member of Trinity Baptist Church. Member of Senior Choir #2, the Mens Chorus, Sunday School Church, Baptist Training Union, and Brotherhood. There was no job for God he would not try to do. Boyd loved his God, Church and Family and gave generously. With his warm loving gentle spirit, he loved giving his Sermon in Song. He was Director of The Harmony Force Choir, Christian Joyful Singers and the Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Vocal Singing Union, and member of the Columbus Vocal Singing Union. After barbering for 2 years in Chillicothe, Ohio and 9 years at Lockbourne Air Force Base, proudly serving members of the Tuskegee Airmen, he opened the first integrated barber shop in Columbus, Ohio, in 1965. A successful business owner for over 48 years, he was an organizer for the Barbers and Beautician and Allied Union, Licensed Real Estate Agent, and member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He loved to fish more than almost anything and was one of the first licensed African American Charter Boat Captains on Lake Erie based out of Port Clinton. He was a member in good standing of the Masonic King David Lodge #116. He danced beyond his 89th birthday with the Men in Black DanceTroupe Incorporated. "Boyd the barber" was an institution in the Southfield/Marion Franklin community and throughout the city, having given so many of us both our first and last haircuts. He liked to say that "he never met a stranger." He leaves to cherish his memory sons, Joseph Straughter and Daniel Holliman; and his beloved mother, Marian Castlin; brother, Mr. Russell Holliman; grandchildren, Shana Straughter, Ashley Straughter, Gabriela Lisette Holliman-Lopez; daughters-in-law, Sibyl Straughter and Gretchen Lopez; devoted friend and caregiver, Ms. Freeda Hill; and a host of nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by father Mr. Prince William Holliman and mother Mrs. Carrie Mae Hull, brother Lawrence Holliman, sisters Beatrice Pack and Pearline Miles. The funeral is to be held Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Trinity Baptist Church, 461 St. Clair Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43203. Calling hours begin at 9 a.m. The celebration of his life will begin at 10 a.m., with Dr. Victor M. Davis, Sr. Pastor presiding. The family asks that flowers or a contribution specifically to the Church Building Fund be sent to the church in honor of Mr. Boyd's memory.

Just learned of the passing of my former Columbus, Ohio barber. Mr. Holliman left his mark on the world in a positive way. I always felt more than a customer because he treated every person who entered his establishment with a special kind of warmth that only Boyd Holliman could give. Lots of fond memories and lots of thanks to the Good Lord for blessing us with this bountiful life. Prayers lifted for the family during this hour of bereavement.

"Uncle" Boyd has been a part of my 53 years of life on this Earth. From haircuts, to fishing, to Boy Scouts, to running out of gas in the Winnebago's so many years ago on vacation, to his infectious laughter, Uncle Boyd was the epitome of a true gentleman. His efforts in the community to help all that he could, to his divine love of God and the example he personified in the way in which he lived a full life of service is a testament to a great man.

Well done, Uncle Boyd. Well done....and please save some heavenly perch for the rest of us!

Holliman Family. Just want to extend our sincere condolences from The Marion Franklin Civic Association and the Southfield Community. We will never forget what Mr. Boyd did for our community. I sat down and had the pleasure of interviewing him last year, I was so amazed at the things he did from Southfield to Rickenbacker AFB. Mr. Boyd believed in me, and every chance he would encouraged me. Words can not receive how the people of Southfield are feeling, we share this lost. If there is anything we can do please do not hesitate to call on The Marion Franklin Civic Association.
