Constance Slettebak Obituary

SLETTEBAK Constance Loraine Pixler Slettebak, died December 2, 2006 in Issaquah, Washington at 82 years of age. Connie was born and brought up in Massachusetts. She earned degrees in music from the College of Wooster and in social work from The Ohio State University. Her greatest joys came with her husband Arne. They met when Connie was the camp music director at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and Arne was a PhD candidate at nearby Yerkes Observatory. Married in New Hampshire, Connie and Arne raised their own family and lived for 49 years in Worthington, Ohio. They shared intellectual pursuits, social life, a love of music and travel - they were citizens of the world. Connie participated as a leader and volunteer in a long string of civic activities that began as organist in her father's church and continued through LaLeche League, Human Relations Council, League of Women Voters, Worthington Democratic Club founding member, Voting Poll worker, Open Door Clinic counselor, Mid-Ohio Knitters Guild co-founder and ESL tutor at INCH program. Her deep commitment to helping others was also reflected in her employment with Concord, Northwest Women's Center and as the first oncology social worker hired at Grant Hospital. Following Arne's death in 1999, Connie was challenged by Alzheimer's disease. She died peacefully of natural causes. Connie remains lovingly in the hearts of her surviving family: her sister, Dolly Peters; her children, Shash (Bill) and Andy (Graciela); and grandchildren, Evan, Nate, Isabel and Jack. A gathering is planned for spring. Remembrances are suggested to the ACLU (www.aclu.org) or INCH (International Neighborhood Coffee Hour) c/o University Baptist Church, 50 West Lane Ave., Columbus, OH 43201. Connie knit a life of caring relationships that we will always cherish.
