Don Cameron Obituary

CAMERON Don Cameron, 66, of New Albany, Ohio, passed away January 10, 2008. A loving husband and father, community leader and true Scotsman. Born in Lakewood, Ohio on September 11, 1941, to Helen Swardell Cameron and Donald Stewart. Don is survived by his wife and loving partner of 21 years, Mary (Deering); and a lively Cameron Clan: daughter, Erin, a student at the St. John Fisher College; daughter, Amy (Chris Cruz) and daughter, Tracy (Don Cook), both of Omaha, Nebraska; son, Donald (Tirza) of New Albany, Ohio; daughter, Kelly (Jeff Novotny) of Arvada, Colorado; daughter, Susan (Rick Coder) of Omaha, Nebraska. He is the grandfather of 16, whom he dearly loved, including Jesse and Skylar Cruz, Matthew, Chelsea, McKenzie and Connor Cook, Stephanie, Taylor and Donnie Cameron, Megan, A.J. and Emma Sue Novotny, Beth, Sean, Patrick and Annie Codor. He is also survived by a brother, Douglas; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Deering Kalish (Robert); several cousins; and Sue Heringer, former wife and mother of 5 of his children. He was preceded in death by his parents and an aunt Betty Koson. A 1959 graduate of Lakewood High School, Don participated in baseball, football and basketball, thus starting a lifelong appreciation for sports. He was a significant booster to New Albany athletics and a constant fixture at sporting events, from little league to high school. Don attended Kent State University and embarked on a 34-year career at UPS, beginning as a clerk and progressing up the ranks to eventually spearhead national labor relations. He loved UPS and developed many friends that remain close today, including Tony Giovannetti, Dave Gosselin, Jack Spergl, Charlie Young and many more. After retirement from UPS, Don co-founded Personal Profiles, a human resources consulting firm. While Don's retirement from UPS marked the end of his professional career, it was the beginning of his public service career as a Plain Township Trustee, where he leaves a remarkable legacy to the community that will enrich lives for generations. His strong leadership was instrumental in the transition of Plain Township's Fire Department from a volunteer group to a full-time professional department whose service ranked among the best. He loved the firefighters and staff. He was a strong advocate of the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts, driven by his desire to see that all residents and students have access to its programming. Don and Mary established an endowment to support center programming and scholarships. He was also an architect of the newly established Columbus Metro Park, serving as the township's lead negotiator and liaison. Don was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, New Albany Walking Club, New Albany Country Club, a former trustee of the Homeless Families Foundation and a current trustee of the Ohio Scottish Arts & Cultural Association. These groups brought many additional special friends, including his buddies from morning water aerobics, the walking club, Starbucks and The Bucket. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, January 14 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, Gahanna, where a Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, January 15 at 10 a.m. at Church of the Resurrection, 6300 E. Dublin-Granville Road, with burial following immediately at Maplewood Cemetery in New Albany. Father Jerome P. Rodenfels, Celebrant. A Celebration of his life and a luncheon, tailgate style, will occur from 12 noon-1:30 p.m. at the Plain Township Fire Department, 9500 Johnstown Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the Don Cameron Memorial Endowment Fund of the New Albany Community Foundation to support educational programming and scholarships, 200 Market Street, Suite 205, New Albany, Ohio 43054. Mary, Erin and Clan.....
Don will be missed by so many and we would have never imagined just how many had we not experienced his celebration of life. Can you imagine what it must have been like for him to be met by Aunt Helen, Aunt Bette and Mom (Marge)? Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all and we would like to leave you with this poem:

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Love, Mark, Michele, Karie and Kevin

I first crossed paths with Don in 1967 as my first Supervisor at UPS in Cleveland Ohio. Our paths crossed many times over the years both professionally and personally. In 1991 Don helped me out with a personal situation. My wife Karen and I will never forget the act of kindness from Don and Mary. I loved the guy and proud to call him a friend. God Bless Don, his family and he will be missed.

Ascension

And if I go, while you're still here know that I live on, vibrating to a different measure, behind a thin veil you cannot see through.

You wil not see me, so you must have faith.

I wait for the time when we can soar together again, all aware of each other. Until then, live your life to its fullest. And when you need me, just whisper my name in your heart...I will be there.

God Bless you all.

How dismayed I was to read of Don's death in this morning's paper. His jovial manner and commitment to the betterment of the lives of others remain uppermost in my mind. Please accept my sincere condolences. May your wonderful memories and the legacy that Don leaves behind serve as comfort to you in the days ahead as you struggle to regain your sense of equilibrium.
