Doryce Lewis Obituary

Lewis, Doryce
1920 - 2017
Doryce Kanoy Lewis, born June 7, 1920, died December 6, 2017. Predeceased by husband, Earl Arthur Lewis, and parents, William Fred Kanoy and Ercle Samuels Kanoy. Survived by: son David Lewis and his children Brant and Miranda Lewis and their sons Damien and Dominic, Gregory Lewis and his children Genevieve, Julianna, Gabriella, and Jacob, and Karen and Kevin Dalton and their children Hughie, Eloise, Tate, and Forrest; son Paul Lewis and his children Mathew Lewis Grandin, Rachel Lewis, and Phoebe and Renaldo Khan and their children Liam and Brooke; daughter Joan Kayagil, son-in-law Muhittin Kayagil and their son Turan Kayagil; and son Marc Lewis, daughter-in-law Frances Lewis and their children Katie and Tom Fitchett and their son Sebastian, Ted Lewis, and Samuel and Margaret Lewis. Doryce was born in High Point, North Carolina, and moved at an early age to Bedford, Ohio, where she met and, in 1940, married Earl. The family lived in Cincinnati in the 1960s, then moved to Upper Arlington for the next four decades. Her primary achievement was, in partnership with Earl, to raise their family and instill in them their values in a way that will be passed on to their descendants in perpetuity. Education, especially reading, was a passion. Mrs. Lewis was a fourth grade teacher, retiring from Barrington Elementary School in Upper Arlington in June 1985. She enjoyed volunteering as a reader for the blind on WOSU in Columbus and helping foreign OSU graduate students with their English language skills. She had a wonderful life: a long-time marriage with a gentle and witty man; healthy, productive, ethical children; talented, hard-working, and energetic grandchildren; a vision of the future with happy, lively, and wonderful great-grandchildren; supportive and warm friends; a rewarding and challenging career; and opportunities for education and travel that had been more than she dreamed of. Her family rejoices with her, and shares this favorite verse of hers, from Swinburne's Hesperia: "Out of the golden, remote wild west where the sea without shore is, Full of the sunset, and sad, if at all, with the fulness of joy." Doryce requested there be no services, visitation, or flowers, and that, if you wish to honor her, please do a kindness for someone who needs you.

When Doryce was a fourth grade teacher at Barrington Elementary School in Upper Arlington, I was a sixth grade teacher. I remember her as a gentle, caring person who found much joy in watching her students discover a love for learning. This obituary brilliantly captures the essence of her spirit, and the inclusion of a few lines of a favorite poem reflects her own love of learning. I regret that we did not maintain contact after our retirements, but I shall always remember our teaching years. May God bless you all.
