Memories and Condolences
for Hang Shantz

Not sure what to say?

Arthur,

My deepest condolences. I don't think I ever saw Hang without her smile and energy to make all a comfortable guest. She fought a courageous battle and now is safe in the arms of the tender Lord. May you also be in His arms, in your grieving and life without her. If I can do anything please never hesitate to call.

Hang’s incredible courage and unwavering faith is truly inspirational. We often marveled that her petite body could hold so much energy and endurance. Her perseverance to seek a cure and her strength to endure severe pain is truly admirable. The vivid memory of a “serious-looking American man” approaching Molly after that Sunday morning mass at St. Elizabeth Church, asking if I would like to meet his Chinese wife some 32 years ago is still fresh as if it happened only yesterday. We thank God for blessing us with the friendship and trust of such a wonderful friend and for giving Molly the privilege to be her Godmother.

Please know that you have been in our daily thoughts and prayers. Hang was fortunate to have you by her side, to love and protect her, and help bring all her family together in their adopted country.

We regret that we will not be able to bid her a last goodbye. We prayed that He will grant her eternal rest, and to you a loving Father’s gentle touch and comforting words, confident that some day we will all meet again in His kingdom. Still we will miss her, a very dear and special friend who taught us so much about suffering and determination.

May God bless and keep you, Arthur. Hang is looking down and smiling at us, assuring us that she is finally HOME, enjoying our Father’s love, up front and close!

I worked with Hang several years while in the Value Engineering Program at Defense Supply Center Columbus, and consider myself blessed to have known her. She was remarkable in so many ways. All will miss her deeply. My greatest sympathy to the Shantz family.

Dear Arthur,

Our deepest sympathies to you on the loss of your lovely wife, Hang. The two of you were always so kind to our children, Laura, Michael and Melanie, and we all looked forward to seeing you at St. Elizabeth. They fondly remember how Hang gave them gifts to celebrate the New Year. She especially seemed to enjoy our curly-haired Melanie, who is now grown. When I told her of Hang's passing, she asked me to let you know that she plans dedicate her run in this year's Race for the Cure to Hang's memory.

God bless you and give you the strength to endure the difficult times ahead.

Arthur and Family, I want to again express my deepest sympathy. There is nothing harder than loosing a loved one and I know how much Hang will be missed. Hang was one of the most wonderful people, she was always dedicated to her religion, her family, work and everything she did. I have worked with Hang for over 20 years and she was one of the group that got together for our dinners out with several retired from VE and then the ones of us still working. We all had such a wonderful time together. She was so easy to love and I will truly miss her. Best to you.

Dear Arthur,

Bereavement is so personal that few of us, unless we have experienced it ourselves, can comprehend its grief. Your wife, Hang, was loved by all of us who worked with her. Her pleasant vitality was a continuous inspiration. I hope that our caring will lessen the sorrow that you bear.

My deepest sympathy to Mr. Arthur Shantz and family. I had the pleasure of knowing Hang at DSCC and was honored to be able to sign her quilt. My fondest memory of her dealt with her generosity to another Associate and in relaying cherished memories about her family. In spite of her illness she was always concerned about others and always greeted me with a smile. She will be sorely missed.

I had the great pleasure of getting to know Hang over the past couple years. Despite her own battle with cancer, she was always so concerned for my brother whom she had never met, as he too was dying of cancer. During our brief but numerous chats, I learned a lot from this wonderful tiny woman. Most importantly, Hang was a clear reminder to me of how generous, compassionate, and even strong a person can be. My wife and I had planned to visit her this weekend after hearing a couple days ago where she was, and truly regret that we couldn't get there sooner. But her courageous and thoughtful spirit will forever be an inspiration to me. We will truly miss Hang.
