Harold H. Janssen

Janssen Harold H. "Hal" Janssen, age 93, of Worthington, OH, died peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2013 surrounded by family at Kobacker House. Born December 17, 1919 on a farm in Golden, IL, son of the late Henry and Hattie Eber Janssen, Hal attended a one-room schoolhouse through high school and then graduated from the University of Illinois in 1940. In 1942 Hal obtained a commission in the Navy and served on an LST (241) participating in 6 major invasions including Iwo Jima, in the Pacific theatre in WWII eventually leaving the service as a full lieutenant in 1945. Hal taught accounting and earned an MBA at The Ohio State University. He joined the accounting firm of Ernst and Ernst and became a CPA. He joined the Union Department Store in 1948 and served over 30 years as Controller, Treasurer and Executive Vice-president. Hal is a past chairman of North Community Lutheran Church where he and his wife Helen were founding members in 1947. He was also a past president of Brookside Country Club and member of the Ohio Society of CPA's and numerous other civic and business organizations. Hal was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Helen Muder Janssen, whom he married on September 16, 1944. He is survived by three children, Jeanette (Randy) Grimes of Kitty Hawk, NC, Eileen (Stephen) Benedict of Pataskala and Donald (Deborah) Janssen of Delaware; grandchildren, Lauren (Trahey) Maner, Marc Grimes, Emilie (Robert) Viola, Catherine Janssen and Christoffer Janssen; seven great-grandchildren. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 2013 at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High Street, Worthington and from 10-11 a.m. Friday at North Community Lutheran Church, 114 Morse Road, Columbus, where Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Pastor Christopher Adams officiating.
