Getting this Guest Book on-line was a reminder to me it's been a year since Dr. Ryan passed.
I will always remember his wonderful personality and charm. My parents, siblings, children, grandchildren, my husband and myself enjoyed him for many years and will continue to in our memories. My husband and I still laugh at some of the things we recall that he said or did when we were in the office. I miss him the staff and going to the office.

Stams,

I can't believe a year has gone by since Jack's passing...I have special memories of you and Jackie. The two of you were a wonderful example for John, Colleen and Bridget, showing how unconditional love and commitment to family is a must for a lifelong relationship.

Once again I spent some time reading the entries on the guest book. What great memories to hold on to....Jackie could put a smile on my face even on a cloudy day....

Cons..

March 19, 2009

Marsha,
When I heard of Jackie' death I immediately went back to our childhood days and I remember a couple of explicit things, which in themselves are little, yet they loomed so largely in my mind because I could see his face and hear his voice. He and I use to catch snakes together in a small wooded area that separated our two houses. There was a huge slab of cement which was part of the old tram line in Columbus. Near the woods there was a milling factory that brought in grain from all over the midwest. With the grain came corn snakes. They would find the way from the boxcars that were filled with grain to the big piece of cement. There they would burrow for the winter and would come out every summer. That's when we would go hunting. One time as we were searching by the slab we saw this enormous corn snake. It must have been 8 feet long. It scared the proverbial crap out of us and we took off running, not realizing of course that the snake was not poisonous and was more scared of us than we of it. We kept our distance from the slab for the rest of the summer. The other vivid memory is Jackie shouting at the height of his voice: "Mom come quick, Patty is killing Herbie." He was in a panic because for whatever reason Peppermint P was irked at me and had me in a strangle hold, I was gasping. Elaine made short shift of the event and we all calmed down and had cookies. The other encounter I remember is after I came to St. Charles drunk one afternoon. I gave it all up on the hallway just as classes were changing. Later Jackie said to me laughing in that uniquely Ryan way: "I gotta say you got guts Herbie". Then our lives took different paths. I would see Jackie when I visited Patty or we had a date, but by that time his life had its own course as did mine.
Later, about 10-15 years ago they crossed again. My elderly mother was having trouble with her dentures, probably more a pyschological problem than medical. Jackie saw her numerous times (for free) always trying to soothe her though he could find nothing wrong with the fit of the dentures. He was so incredibly kind and cheerful. After he visit she say "Oh what a nice BOY he is". Funny the memories that spring to mind when a person we knew and loved from boyhood dies. Since I haven't seen him physically in so long, his death is quite abstract to me, and therefore somewhat unreal. In away he is still in Columbus doing his thing with his family, friends and patients. I think that Jack was an extremely good person and that he has been reborn into a higher realm of existence.
Love,
Herbie

Four generations of our family have had Dr. Ryan as their dentist. He was also our "Dr. Phil". He and Martha were a good team. As has been said over and over again, he was more than our dentist, he was a good friend. It's an end of an era and we will miss him. The Robison/White Family

Marsha, Since some of the guests here are admitting to crushes on Jackie, I want everyone to know about mine. On you, of course, ever since we roller-skated holding hands at Corpus Christi in 1961.

JR, Sorry I was not there for Jackie's wake. We'll drink a shot of Irish to him next time. After reading
all the condolences here, all my teeth are starting to ache.

I was very fortunate in having taught with your father, Jack, at Hartley; coached and taught with you at Watterson; taught Algebra II to Jackie's and Marsha's Johnny at Hartley. Having you as a friend and
teaching Johnny are at the top, except the night of teacher-parent conferences when Jackie and Marsha
stopped by to visit.

May God continue to bless the Ryan clan as He has so abundantly before.
My deepest condolences and my fervent pledge of support to Marsha, Jimmie and all the Ryans.

Marsha & Family,

I just heard today about Dr. Ryan's passing. I am shocked and sad. " He was my friend and I will miss him."

I have traveled to Columbus from Dayton to see him since 1998 and have been a patient of his since 1992 and I have loved every minute of it.

He is/was a special person and I can say that I have been blessed to have known him.

Thank you for sharing him with all of us. He will be truly missed.

My prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Ryan Family,

Our family offers our deep condolences for your loss. I went to St. Charles with "Jackie". We were good friends, and had some wonderful times. Having read all the guesbook entries, it is obvious (and wonderful) to see that he was so admired, and loved. He was always wonderful to be with, and was always first to rise to the occasion to help someone. It appears that he is cherished by many, many people. You will be in our prayers.

Dear Ryan Family-

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of such a wonderful person. I like others was shocked to hear of his passing. Dr. Ryan was my first dentist as a child when he was with Dr. Stewart, then he became my children's first dentist. I have read all the entries and it does seem that he touched us all in the same ways: funny, witty, and compassionate. I too can hear him say "You won't need novacaine for that. It'll just take me a minute." I was so nervous the first time he talked me into this, but he was right. I was equally impressed when he talked my 6 year old daughter into this just this past summer, but he has a way of making everyone feel at ease. Jack always looked out for what was best for his patients, and I will forever be thankful to him. He made it worth driving the extra miles to stay with his practice. I am sad to lose him as my dentist and a family friend. I will never find another dentist like him. I am sure there is a special place in heaven for people like him. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Marsha, John, Colleen, Bridget, Jimmy, Joe, Kathleen, Patty, and all the Ryan Family,

I cannot believe how deeply sad I feel about the passing of Dr. Jack. Even now I tear up thinking of how much fun he was to be around. Though we rarely have seen each other now down through threw the years, he was one-of-a-kind. From Coach Ryan on down, you are a very special family that I always cherish my association with. May God Bless you all with the knowledge that Jackie is even now up in heaven telling God how things should have been done from the beginning ...and don't ever listen to Jimmy!

My Most Sincere Condolences,

Dr. Ryan wasn't just our dentist; he was a much-loved member of an extended family whose many representatives stood in line for hours to share memories and thoughts of him. Never knew anyone like him. I'll always remember how he pestered me to allow him to fix my broken tooth. It took five years of dental appointments before he talked me into it...and it stayed fixed for 32 years! Not too many individuals leave a lifetime of funny memories and improved lives as a legacy, but Dr. Ryan did. It was a blessing to have known him!

To The Family of Dr. Ryan,
My heart is saddened today by the loss of such a great man. He made going to the Dentist easy and fun. Everytime I would go see him he always asked me about my parents who lived in Tennessee but would come to Columbus at least twice a year to "see the dentist". He was loved by our family and will be greatly missed. May God comfort you in this time.

My husband and I were Jack's patients for over 30 years. My parents were born in Ireland, I am Catholic and grew up in New York City and my husband retired from the Whitehall Police Dept. Over the years we provided Jack with plenty of material for lively discussions. Jack never quite understood how hard it was to answer him when you had instruments or fingers in your mouth! We most definitely will miss Jack and our discussions. Dental appointments will never be the same.
Our sympathy and prayers to the Ryan family.

To the Ryan family,
I am so very sorry to hear about Jack, although I knew he was ill, it was still such a shock. The last time I saw him he was so happy and excited to show me the new puppies, he was like a big kid. He has been my dentist for almost 30 years and I always looked forward to chatting with him, no matter what he was doing to my teeth, I always had to hold back a laugh. It was like visiting a big brother, and he felt like family. The Irish music he played was wonderful, and the big shamrock out front to greet people always made me smile. Many years ago the subject of tattoos came up, he showed his shamrock on his leg. I decided soon after to get one too. My mom was not so happy until I told her "Jack has one too"...then it was ok. After reading all these posts, it seems apparent that everyone loved him and felt the same way.Such a kind man....the world has lost a great man, but heaven has indeed gained a new angel.
May the road rise up to meet you,
may the wind be always at your back.
may the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

I open this guest book everyday to read the memories and thoughts that are shared about Jackie. He certainly touched so many people of all ages. The common denominator is that he made all of us smile. Marsha, Dr. Joe & The Ryan Family:
Leaving this message is one of the hardest things I have had to do. Dr. Ryan was the best dentist and person that walked on this earth. I first started going to Dr. Ryan July 1976.
Dr. Ryan is not only a caring Dentist, but a person. I trusted him so much with my teeth, that he filled cavities without numbing me up first. Dr. Ryan QUOTE: Just 1 more minute, almost done, don't bite me. I can still hear that voice. Oh, and how he teased Pam and the girls that worked for him. Dr. Ryan would dish it out, but they also gave it right back to him. I teased him about wearing his purple gloves, and he would just grin.
Colleen, when I first started coming to the office, your Father reminded me that he also had a daughter named Colleen, then it was Bridget, and John. He love you kids, and Marsha was the apple of his eye.
Dr. Joe, Dr. Ryan was your big brother, but you too, have a heart of gold, and you sound so much like your brother.
I will Miss you Dr. Ryan, your Irish Music, and the big green painted shamrock that greeted you at the front door. To the bestest friend ever.....

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Ryan's passing. He was one of the nicest most caring men and one of the nicest bosses I've ever known. My heart is full of sadness for you , who are left behind...my thoughts are filled with wonderful memories of the great guy Jack left everyone.

An Irish Poem that served my brother, Dave Murphy well ~

Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Everything remains as it was.
The old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no sorrow in your tone.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.
There is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting, when we meet again.

Jackie meant so much to so many people. He was not only my dentist; he was my comedian. He always told me jokes when he came into Rooster's after his "golf night" with the guys. When my dad became ill, he was the first one to ask about him and offer his sympathy. That is something that you don't usually find in a doctor. He was one of a kind and I am sure that he touched the lives of everyone that had the pleasure of meeting him. My prayers go out to his family and staff.

Dr. Ryan was truley a wonderful man. I became a patient of his when he first opened his practice in Whitehall. He took the fear out of dentistry and made coming to his office warm and inviting. I became a Dental Assistant and worked with him part time until I secured a full time position. I am now the lead orthodontic assistant at Ohio State University College of Dentistry. I owe all of my successes to Dr. Ryan for instilling with in me the interest in dentistry. Dr. Ryan was very well liked in the community and he touched so many lives. He will be missed. Dr. Jack Ryan was my dentist since I was 16. I am now 50. (34 Years). My mother was his first patient and referred me . He was also the only dentist my daughters Christina (30 years) and Ann (19 years) used. He was also going to be my granddaughter dentist. Coming to Dr. Ryan for a visit was like visiting a friend. I looked forward to coming to the dentist. I can not believe he is gone. Dr. Ryan is someone that you thought would live forever. He will be greatly missed.

Our sincerest sympathy to the Ryan family. We were so upset tonight to hear of Jack`s passing. I went to school with him for 12 yrs and as I remember, he was very smart and quite the prankster in grade school. That seemed to follow through as he became a dentist. He made going to the dentist fun for every one of our kids whether it be squirting me with the hose as I waited in the hall by the exam room, or letting the kids pick a different little toy out after they finished....it isn`t often that kids look forward to going to the dentist. Our`s did. Thank you, Jack! With much sorrow, Bill and Suzi Hasbrook and Family

I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Ryan's passing. I have always dreaded going to the dentist but he was always quick to put a smile on your face and make you laugh. He took a great interest in getting to know you as a person and didn't care whether you could afford to pay. My husband saw Dr. Ryan since he was a kid and tells of a time when Dr. Ryan asked him to sit on another patients feet while he pulled the man's tooth. He told my husband "he's a wiggler" He was one of a kind and will leave behind a great legacy. He will be truly missed. Our condolences to the entire family.
God Bless

Marsha and family- Jack was my first Hartley crush. He was a senior and I was freshman. He made it worth going to school although he had no idea who I was !! I have about him over the years and have fond thoughts. Marsha, you were a lucky lady to have been loved by Jack !! Maybe that will help you through your pain. Remember all the good times and laugh and rejoice in his life.

Dr. Ryan will be missed by myself, as well as my whole family. He was my dentist and friend for almost 30 years. He took a liking to me probably because I'm Irish and because my mom worked for him (Joan Purpura). He always had a quick wit and a big smile. The world will not be the same. I will miss you my friend. My deepest sympathy to his family...God bless.

Dear Ryan Family and Staff,
My family and I have been patients of Dr. Ryan for 15 years or so. He was a dear man and will be deeply missed by all of us.When my daughter was little he had to pull many of her teeth, well one time he pulled two and she cried. It must of got to him because he gave her money and said it was from the tooth fairy.
Well you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

My husband just called to tell me about Dr. Ryan and I am so sad. Dr. Ryan was the most unselfish and truly caring person that I have ever known. I can't imagine this world without him but I know in my heart that he is needed in heaven, although that doesn't make it any easier right now. Call me selfish but he touched so many lives on a daily basis and always made me smile and feel good about people and life because of his spirit. I have been truly blessed to have known him!

Many people dread going to the dentist but not to Dr. Ryan. He had a special touch and before you knew it he was done. LOL... It would only take a few minutes, he would put your head in his arm and presto it was all done! There will never be another dentist like Dr. Ryan. I know my stepdaughter will never forget her last visit and the words of wisdom he gave her on that special day. He touched so many lives and will be missed deeply. God Bless, our prayers are with you all!!!

I first met Jack back in the early 70's when he was an OSU dental school student and he moonlighted as the so-called "night watchman" at the old Franklin County court house. He was my dentist for over 30 years and although he was very busy, he always took a few minutes to chat with me about my life and our mutual friends. I could always count on Jack to bring a smile to my face. My deepest sympathy to Marsha, the children and the entire Ryan family. Dr. Jack Ryan was a wonderful man and outstanding dentist, and I will dearly miss him.

Dr. Ryan has been our dentist and good friend for over 34 years. He was there for us during some very dark days and cheered us with his wit and sense of humor, then was the first to call with congratulations when our son was chosen football coach at Hartley. We will miss him deeply and will smile when we think of him. Our deepest sympathies to all his family.

Dr. Ryan was the only dentist my children have ever known. Our entire family has gone to him since he first entered the practice with Dr. Stewart in the 70's. He was like a big brother to me. Even though I have never met his family, I feel as though I know each of you. We always shared the events going on with our children, his grandchildren and his beloved wife, Marsha. I know he loved each and every one of you. My heart goes out to his work family as well. He was so full of life, I just can't imagine him being gone. He will be sadly missed by all but in a better place. St Patrick's Day will never be the same without him.
