John Charles "The Chief" Mahaney Jr., age 89, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2021. He was born on April 6, 1932 in Zanesville, Ohio to the late John Charles and Juliana (Gonda) Mahaney Sr. He was a 1950 graduate of St. Thomas High School in Zanesville, Ohio. In 1954, John earned a Bachelor's Degree from Niagara University in New York. He served in the United States Army from 1954-1956, and then served in the Reserves until 1965. John was President and CEO of the Ohio Council of Retail Merchants from 1970 until his retirement in 2013, where he then served as Vice Chairman until his death. John was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor to many successful people. His two loves in life were The Council and his family. He was a huge sports fan, particularly Bishop Watterson Football, San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Bengals. He was never seen without a cigar. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife Sandy, and brother Jim Mahaney. He will be greatly missed by his children, John (Pam) Mahaney III., Julie (Brian) O'Reilly, and Matthew (Shelley) Mahaney; grandchildren, Michael and Katherine Leahy, and Madeline and Cassandra Mahaney; sisters-in-law, Delores Mahaney, Judy Feucht, and Cynthia Malling; nieces, Nancy Dever and Amy Agger; and nephews, Brian and Brad Beleski. Family will receive friends from 2-5PM on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM on Monday, July 12, 2021 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1899 McCoy Road, Columbus, Ohio 43220. Private burial at Resurrection Cemetery, Lewis Center, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Waterson High School Mahaney Family Scholarship, 99 E. In 1957 John was brought in as Sales Manager at WJMA Radio in Orange, Virginia. At the time the station was struggling to sell advertising. Within a year John turned things around. He played an important part in WJMA's survival.

Chief was a great man. He was beloved by so many and always treated others respectfully. I took care of him for many years at Capital Club and it was always an adventure! Rest in peace Chief you earned it!
