Backiewicz Joseph S. Backiewicz, D.D.S., age 81, of Blacklick, entered into eternal rest Thursday, November 14, 2013. He was born November 12, 1932 in Toledo, OH to the late Joseph and Helen Backiewicz. Joe was a 1950 graduate of Toledo Central Catholic H.S. He graduated from the John Carroll University and the University of Detroit Dental School. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. Joe ran his dental practice in Columbus and Gahanna for 41 years and served on the Board of Health for 24 years. He was an active member of St. Matthew the Apostle Church and a member of the New Albany Country Club. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law Edward and Helen Poss, brothers-in-law Dr. C.C. Eberwein and Ed Poss, and sister-in-law Mary Jo Brockman. Joe will be missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Maureen Backiewicz; children, Joseph (the late Beverly), Ann Marie (Rick) Stone, Dean (Anne), Barry, Brian (Lynette), Timothy (Leslie), and Matthew (Sarah); grandchildren, Kimberly (Whit) Lacount, Joseph, Brett, Emily (Ryan) Chesonis, Patrick, Maggie, Chet, Sam, Maria, Allyson, Logan Purdy, Timmy, Julia, Lilly Hock, Zachary, Brendan, and Mary; sister, Rita Eberwein; sister-in-law, Betty Poss; and brother-in-law, Harry Brockman. Family will receive friends Sunday, November 17, 2013 from 2-5 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd. (at Beecher Rd.), Gahanna, OH where a rosary will be said at 4:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 18, 2013 at St. Matthew the Apostle Church, 807 Havens Corners Rd., Gahanna, OH 43230, Fr. Theodore K. Sill, Celebrant. Interment Headley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joe's memory to St. Matthew's Charitable Works.
