I was in Graduate School at the U of Illinois with Juan. He was one of my favorite people from Graduate School. I had lost touch with him and just today was searching the internet for him. I was saddened to learn that he had passed away. I doubt that many of his family and friends knew how hard he worked and how much he sacrificed to become a PhD and then an MD. He was a wonderful person and I wish I had kept in contact over the years.

Juan Cardenas was a wonderful, warm, caring man. Always made myself and my little brothers feel like he was happy to see us and special. As a high school athlete Dr. Cardenas even came out to watch a game of mine... where he had several patients competeing. Very sad to hear of his passing. A person I would have loved to take my children to.

My daughter was a patient of Dr. Cardenas for 20 years and went on to see a physician for adults. We just recently found out that Dr. Cardenas has passed. My daughter has a son now and had hoped he would be his pediatrician. Our hearts go out to Dr.Cardenas's family, he was a great man and physician

Dear Reader;
My name is Natalie Cardenas. I am Jaun Cardenas's granddaughter. My grandfather.. My grandfather was the most gracious, kind, loving, thoughtful person I know. Every summer I would visit him. It was the time of year I would look forward to most. Everytime I think of my grandpa I think of the summer. I remeber when I was little we would go swimming, my sister grandpa and I, and he would tell us there were sharks in the lake. I was little and didn't know any better so I would swim faster. I always think of that day.I miss y grandpa very much. I'm nat asking for your symapthy. I'm asking that we all remember a time he made us smile, laugh, or helped us. Because that's the way I will always remember him.

Dr. Cardenas was the BEST doctor a family could have!!! He always took the time with our kids and would call and check up on them the next day. He even came in on a Sunday when our son was really sick so we wouldn't have to sit in the emergency room all day. He was amazing, I have so many stories of Dr. C, the love for his job was evident by the care my kids received and by the time he spent seeing how the whole family was doing. Our prayers go out to his wife, kids and grandkids. He will truly be missed and there won't be another doctor like him he was "one of a kind" how blessed we were to have him in our lives!!!!!

Dr. Cardenas was the best pediatrician, friend and mentor a person could ever have. He was my childrens pediatrician for 20 years. He not only cared for my children medically but also emotionally. He gave educational guidance and life counseling with every visit. Juan has been a true mentor for my son. Even a week before he died my son had the opportunity to speak to Juan on the phone about his educational path. When my daughter came down with H1N1 in November and I didn't feel her current pediatrician was treating her properly I called Juan for help. Juan help me get her into a specialist and made sure she received the treatment he would have personally given her. During the duration of her illness I would send Juan periodic updates and he continued the advice about what we needed to do next. What a wonderful caring person he was. I can truly say that my life and the lives of my children were truly bless for having known Juan Cardenas. We will miss his friendship greatly.

What an amazing doctor he was...Dr. Cardenas will be missed but remembered as a compassionate, caring doctor. We were so grateful to have had our 3 children in his care for more than 20 years. Thank you for being so amazing to our children. He always listened so tenderly when we had concerns, his way of being a doctor was something that could never have been taught but was displayed with true compassion. We will never forgot Dr Cardenas, as he is part of our children's history!

Dr. Cardenas was one of a kind. My children are all grown now, but I will never forget the kind, caring person he was. There were many times that he would call me on a Saturday night just to check on my son, when he was sick. One time my daughter was crawling around on the office floor and found the mylar sticker he so often gave the kids. She was a baby and got the sticker stuck in her throat. After several attempts to get it up, Doctor C. put me and both of my small children in his car drove us to childrens hospital, where they were able to get the sticker out of my babys throat. That is when he stopped handing out mylar stickers, and that is the kind of person, doctor he was. Dr Cardenas never did medicine so he could get rich. He did it because he truly cared. I will never forget him or what a wonderful person he was or how much it meant to know my babies were in his wonderful care.

Dr. Cardenas was such an intriguing man. He was able to be firm as a businessman yet very caring and tender towards PEOPLE. He loved people. He truly cared for each and every patient and their families and was on a mission to help them however he could. I was always fascinated by his unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He always seemed to have his eye on the next best thing to learn or achieve in life. Juan had the curiosity of a little boy -everything fascinating and interesting to him. Although he seemed quiet, he would often come to my office and just sit while waiting for his next patient, and start deep conversations or impart some of his insights about life. What a fascinating man he was! On a funny note, I'll never forget that he could never stop reminding me how he loved my Triple Layer Chocolate Mocha Cake! He always had a good recipe or idea to share.
Deanna -you were truly blessed with this man who so obviously found you the love of his life. Thank you for sharing him with all of us and making him so happy. May knowing how special he was to all of us comfort you during this time and in the future.

It is with great sadness that we learned the news of Dr. Cardenas passing. Sadness only for all of us who will miss him so; as we know heaven is richer for having him there. Almost eleven years ago we met Dr. Cardenas after having our first son after struggling for five years with infertility. Dr. Cardenas new a nervous Mom and Dad when he met them! Lucky for us he knew EXACTLY how to calm nervous parents. He was so "genuinely" caring, patient and willing to take his time to explain everything. It was not unusual but the norm for Dr. Cardenas to call us in the evening just to check up on our children through the years when he had seen them during the day for illness. That is a committed, loving and selfless doctor! We have always had and always will have the utmost respect for him. He became a friend through the years and we shared our love of cooking and recipes. At Christmas time we brought him a fresh venison roast as we knew his love for venison. At first it seemed such a strange gift to give your physician. However, he loved it and couldn't wait to prepare it with one of his amazing recipes! The world has lost one of the most incredible doctors and our family shares that loss and the loss of a great friend. To his family we pray that God will bring you peace and comfort during your time of loss and days ahead. He spoke of you all often with much joy in his words and on his face. Thank you for sharing him and his time with the world. The world, MANY children and families are better for knowing him including mine. He will live on in all of those he has touched through the years. He was a man who wasn't afraid to stand up for what he believed in and support what was right and good. He stood tall in our hearts and mind and always will. Thank you Dr. Cardenas for caring so much for all of us. We love and miss you.

What an extraordinary human being and man. He taught my children and myself many life lessons. We feel so fortunate to have known him and share him with so many. I take comfort in knowing that he lived his life so fully, cooking, traveling...his interest in the arts, politics..
He gave so much to so many and in so many ways..
He showed my boys that you can be a man and still be kind, warm, and giving. You were a godsend to Chloe throughout the years.
I loved that he thought outside the box and relished in staying outside all the beaurocracy when at all possible.
He shared his love of his wife with us, and told me once that it's not opposites that attract..that he used to think that that was the case ..but then he met Deanna and realized how fulfilling it was to find someone to share all his interests with. I met you , Deanna a couple times and you are lovely. I can't imagine how much you'll miss him.
It didn't surprise me that he isn't having a service, how like him that is...so humble and real
You were so often our "true north" Dr. Cardenas...and you healed us both emotionally and physically...what a gift.
We love you ....Jodi, Ian, Seth and Chloe Hammond...and Christi Gehrisch

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Cardenas death. He was such a wonderful man & a great doctor. I began seeing Dr. Cardenas when I was 6 years old and he helped me deal with migraines & fight the school system when they diagnosed me with ADD and I was truly just bored. He also helped to fight for my brother for a diagnosis of bipolar when all the specialist couldn't find a diagnosis. He was there and helped find the diagnosis for my other brother who has seizures. No one else could find these conditions/diagnosis and/or didn't care. But Dr. Cardenas was there, listened to the issues and helped find a solution. He was truly a great doctor and a wonderful man. My thoughts & prayers are with his family.

Dr. Juan Cardenas is perhaps the greatest physician I have ever encountered. He cared for me from the age of 7 until 18. His humor, compassion, honesty, and love of medicine rivaled that of his love for his patients and drove me to the medical field. I am what I am because of Dr. Cardenas. He is a master clincian, diagnostician, undaunting advocate for his patients, and most of all a true friend. He was the Jonas Salk of his patients hearts and lives; far outreaching the accomplishments of names that will live forever in medicine. He will, however, live forever in my and my families hearts and the families of all those he served so well and graciously.

We feel like we have lost a member of our family. We loved Dr. Cardenas and we know he loved us! When I first brought our sick infant son to him, he said, " Honey, you need to put away those baby books and this is what we are going to do to make your son well!" It worked and it has been a loving relationship between us ever since! When our son made Eagle Scout, he came to the court of honor. When our youngest was taking cooking classes, he used to send him recipes. One time he spent so much time talking to the boys that the nurse knocked on the door to see if everything was ok! When you were with him, he made you feel like you were the only patient he had that day! We would like to thank his family for sharing him with us. We were blessed to know him and to have him in our lives. The world was a better place because of Dr. Cardenas and his patients and families will never forget him.
