Kenneth Carpenter Obituary

CARPENTER Kenneth Neff Carpenter, M.D., age 73 of South Vienna passed away peacefully Monday morning October 15, 2012 at the Kobacker House, Columbus. Born November 2, 1938 in Columbus, Ohio. A loving husband, caring father, compassionate grandfather and dedicated physician, who was well known for his long pony tail, flashy glasses, gold chains, colorful sweaters and shirts. He received his medical degree from The Ohio State University and completed his training at Dartmouth College and returned to Columbus in 1965 to seek a small town family practice. Dr. Carpenter practiced medicine for 47 years in Dublin. He was a caring and compassionate physician. He had a gift to listen to his patients, known for making house calls and long hospital visits with each one of his patients. He was dedicated to the traditional family medical practice and expanded it to the Dublin Medial Mall in 1982. He enjoyed following both college and local high school sports and athletes. He always looked forward to attending the high school state championship tournaments and the OSU football and basketball games. He enjoyed Christmas and collected antique ornaments that he proudly displayed in his home. Dr. Carpenter supported many philanthropic efforts within Dublin and quietly donated the funds to start the 4th of July fireworks tradition in Dublin. Preceded in death by parents Owen B. and Elizabeth C. (Neff) Carpenter. Ed and I were Dr. Carpenter's patients since we were teenagers, beginning with visits in the house in Dublin and then in the Medical Mall. Our patient files were thick with years of history. Dr. C was always spot on with his diagnosis and there with a hug or arm around the shoulder when he delivered news none of us wanted to hear. I remember so well laughing as I left his office and feeling like I was his only patient and also a friend. One of my favorite stories was about his tiny little white dog that liked to sleep curled up on his bald head.

Ed and I were so saddened to hear of Dr. Carpenter's passing. We think of him often and mostly for the unique and caring individual he was. Rest in peace Dr. C

Dear Pat,

Only today did Insuk and I learn of Dr. Carpenter's passing and we want to pass our belated condolences to you and your family.

We're deeply saddened by the news. The world has lost a wonderful man and heaven is now a better place.

He had such an impact on our lives. I can recall the day he lectured me in a very fatherly and effective way for not arranging to have my 50th birthday present (aka a colonoscopy) which, when I did have it done, led to the discovery of a thankfully benign polyp. And then there was the time he listened, as he always did, with all of his powers focused on you and your needs, to Insuk's array of odd symptons and became convinced, rightly so at it turned out, that she had a type of stomach ailment, one which those of Asian descent are more prone to have, which could develop into a very serious problem if left untreated.

But most of all it was his manner and bearing that we'll remember and miss. I can recall looking forward to seeing him just because I enjoyed talking with him and answering his questions about Honda, my employer, and all the things we were working on. Many of my colleagues were his patient and in addition to asking me about my life and how I was doing, he'd ask about them too. He had a certain charm that made Insuk feel at ease and secure in his presence, and he would compliment her on what she wore that day and show off the latest addition to his watch or shoes collection. And for as long as he knew her he urged her to quit her job and and rid herself of the stress she got from it and enjoy life instead.

She finally took his advice and, as she reminded me today, she told him at our last physical which happened to be the last time we saw him. He was so happy to hear that news, and that happiness turned out to be his parting gift to us.

God bless him. RIP Doctor Carpenter.

Dear Pat and Family:
It is with deep regret to hear of Doc's passing today. Not only was he a terrific Dr., but a better man. Always made us feel we were the most important patients he had and after reading all the wonderful testimonials of his life, it's clear he made everyone feel this way. Happened by chance to stop into the office on his last day of work and feel very fortunate to have seen him. We will miss him, his jokes, glasses, shirts, and shoes. Our prayers are with you Pat and your family. God Bless and RIP Doc.

Pat and Family.

It is with great saddness that I just found out today about the passing of the best M.D. a patient can have. If not for him I would not have been able to overcome some major medical issues that has affected me over the past 47 years. You will be missed as a M.D. and a great friend. RIP

I am just finding out about Dr. Carpenter's passing and am quite saddened. Dr. Carpenter became my mother's doctor in 1969 and delivered me in August. He was our family physician for years and I have such fond memories of him. I was born with a chronic illness and was sick quite often as a child. Dr. Carpenter went above and beyond with me. He gained the trust of a terrified little girl...and I will be eternally grateful to him.

My thoughts are with the Carpenter family. He truly was a great man.

Ken was our physician since 1978 when we moved to Columbus. He saved us from disaster more than once. He was always thinking of others. One of the last times I saw him he said he was resigned to his illness but his concern was for Pat and the rest of his family he was going to leave behind. Again, thinking of others. We will miss him so very much. Pat, we will keep you and the rest of your family in our prayers. God Bless You.

Pat and Family, I'am so upset to hear this. I can't stop crying. Death is the last chapter in time, but the first chapter in eternity. God knew he was going to be special ever since birth. Even though he left, in our hearts he will never be gone. He was my doctor for 36 years or more. I'll never find a doctor that will ever compare to him, ever! “Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.” That's my doctor Carpenter. I will miss him so much. What a great man! RIP Doc.

God must have needed an extra special angel to be on his team. Although he is gone from the physical world, he will continue to live on in each person he came in contact with and forever have a loving imprint on all our lives.

I will cherish every minute I shared with him. By far he is the coolest man I've ever met. Looking beyond the obvious "cool factor" about him, he cared not for only your physical being but more importantly your soul. With Doc you got a friend first, then a physician. That was the key to his success.

Doc, you are the best!

Dr. Carpenter was such a good, kind soul. He was my doctor for many years, but he was also someone I would consider my friend. This summer he told me to come back for another appointment in 3 months, but he said he wouldn't be there. I was devastated when he explained why. I said why are you still working. He smiled and said this wasn't work. He said he looked forward to coming in and seeing the people he cared about. God Bless him and his family. He made my life better for having known him.
