Leon Peters Obituary

PETERS Leon Peters Jr., age 85, left this world peacefully Thursday, April 23, 2009 after a courageous battle with kidney failure and pancreatic cancer. He leaves us to remember his contagious laughter, smile on his face and song in his heart. He was born to Leon and Ethel Peters on May 28, 1923. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Adam, Dorothy and Ethel and his grandson Peter Michael Cameruca. Leon is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Marie; his children, Amy (Larry) Thomas, Melinda (Frank) Todaro, Chris (Dan Cohee) Peters, Patty Peters, Andy (Leni) Peters, Robbie Cameruca, Karen (Steve) Ellingson; nine grandchildren; twin sisters, Irene Cochoff and Sophia Payton; and a large extended family. Leon was a longtime member of Our Lady of Victory church where he served as an usher. He was a loving husband and father, strong mentor and brilliant engineer. He nurtured his family and students who have enjoyed great success. Professor Peters' technical career began with a radar course at The Ohio State University. He repaired radars throughout Sicily, Italy, Germany and France during W W II. After the war, he earned his BSEE, Masters and PhD at The Ohio State University and became a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department. He served as Director of the ElectroScience Laboratory for eleven years and completely retired in 2007. He was widely recognized as a leader in his field and a Life fellow of IEEE. His former PhD students are widely published. His final paper was published in 2008. The family extends their gratitude to Dr. Paul Leidheiser, HomeReach Hospice and his friends at Davita Dialysis Clinic. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Sunday at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, where prayer service will be held 7:30 p.m., Sunday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m., Monday, April 27, 2009 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 1559 Roxbury Road, with Fr. Romano Ciotola, Celebrant. Interment to follow St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Ohio, 1373 Grandview Avenue, Suite 200, Columbus, Oh. 43212-2804 or to a favorite charity of choice, in his memory.

Please accept my deeptest sympathy at the passing of my good friend, Leon. While serving as a Captain in the Air Force, Leon was very instrumental in helping us with education programs at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Leon was always available as a consultant and mentor while at the Aeronautical Systems Division. Leon was a great man and a true friend. Our loss is great with his passing.
