Leroy Cherry Obituary

CHERRY Leroy Cherry, age 89, was born March 26, 1922 in Pensacola, FL to Eugene and Nellie Cherry. He passed Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Broadview Health Center in Columbus, OH. Retired from John Deere after 30 years of service. Avid sports fan. Loved jazz music. Coached and played baseball. In the 1940's he was a top contender in Golden Glove boxing. He was honored VIP during a boxing tournament at the Police Athletic League of OH in Zanesville and was presented a pair of boxing gloves signed by James Buster Douglas, former World Heavyweight Champion. Preceded in death by parents, brothers Russell and Melvin (Mary), sister Eugenia Harris, nieces Doretha Wells and Joyce Cherry, nephews Melvin Harris and Aaron Saunders. Survived by children, Constance (Robert) Jackson and Michael Hodges; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mabel Cherry (Russell); and several nieces and nephews. Graveside Burial Service will be 12 noon, Tuesday, April 5, 2011, Eastlawn Cemetery, 1340 Woodland Ave, Columbus, OH. Professional services entrusted to the WAYNE T. LEE FUNERAL SERVICE, 1370 E. Main St., Columbus, OH 43205 (614) 253-7944. Family request flowers are sent in his memory to the Broadview Health Center, 5151 N. Hamilton Rd, Columbus, OH 43230.
