Raymond O'Dell Obituary

O'DELL Raymond Thomas O'Dell, was born on February 24, 1927 and died on May 13, 2008 from cancer. He was a highly respected educator and coach for 30 years at Hamilton Township High School in OH, before retiring to Scottsdale, AZ where he continued his career at Peoria High School. He served in the Navy during WWII. After the war, he graduated from Ohio State University, where he was on the football team and a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was the Past President of many organizations including Ohio Education Assoc., Ohio Classroom Teachers Assoc., Arizona Classroom Teachers, Franklin Co. Education Assoc., and the Central Ohio Education Assoc. He was also a Member of the Board of Directors for Franklin Co. Education Assoc. An active member of Chaparral Christian Church. A generous supporter of numerous charities. Raymond is survived by sons, Stephen O'Dell (Karon) and Gary O'Dell; daughters, Louanne Jones (Stephen) and Rebecca Craig; 10 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents Dallas and Louise O'Dell, son Thomas O'Dell, grandson Brett Sutton, son-in-law Mark Craig, wives Cleo O'Dell and Millie O'Dell. A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at Chaparral Christian Church. Interment is at Resthaven Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Camp Kids scholarship fund in his memory c/o Chaparral Christian Church 6451 E. Shea Blvd. Scottsdale, AZ. I am a first cousin of Raymond, and was very sorry to receive the news of his death. We always lived in different cities, but looked forward to gathering at our family reunions and renewing acquaintance. I have always respected him. Sad about our loss.

I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. O'Dell. I knew his family very well. He was the ultimate teacher and coach and will always be remembered as an excellent disciplinarian. He commanded great attention when he spoke and I will never forget what he did for his students and athletes.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. O'Dell. He was a very fine teacher and an excellent athletic coach. He had a wonderful sense of humor. I often remember the times when he sang "Sixteen Tons" during school musicals. Hank Morgan, Hamilton Class of 1956.
