Rena Maurer Obituary

Maurer, Rena E.
1934 - 2018
Rena Elaine (Edson) Maurer was born January 9, 1934 in Westminster, Vermont and passed away June 3, 2018 in Columbus, Ohio joining her husband of 52 years Ralph Alan Maurer, Jr. who welcomed her to Heaven. Rena was a spunky New Englander who retained her sharp wit and humor, joking with family members and making them laugh through their sadness, as they surrounded her with love during her final days at OSU Ross Heart Hospital and Ohio Health - Kobacker House. Her body succumbed to the Pulmonary Fibrosis she suffered with for many years, and her lungs are finally full again, with no more pain. Rena grew up in New Hampshire with her 7 brothers and sisters enjoying the New England countryside, and excelled at her small High School where she was a member of the basketball team despite her short stature. She moved to Ohio in 1956 to work at Ohio State University Hospital as a surgery nurse, and then met Ralph on a blind date and they immediately fell in love. They were married at the Congregational Church in Langdon, New Hampshire on September 14, 1957. Shortly after their wedding they faced their first marital crisis as Rena contracted TB and was confined to a TB Hospital for 9 months. She later was the RN on the staff of a local OBGYN office for 30 years. There was never a doubt where Rena stood on a subject, as she would be happy to tell you in a loving way using her humor or maybe giving you a look. She had many friends from her neighborhood in east Columbus, her work, her condo community in Reynoldsburg, and her apartment at Middleton Senior Living in Granville. She also had friends at the churches she attended and volunteered at, Epiphany Lutheran, Reynoldsburg UMC, and Centenary UMC. Rena also volunteered for many years at the Eastview UMC Food Pantry in Whitehall. She and Ralph were avid square dancers as members of Sundowners Square Dance Club. As a mother she raised two independent and hard working children, and 5 loving grandchildren. She is survived by her son Scott (Katie) Maurer, daughter JoAnn (Jay) Stanley, her grandchildren Joshua, Andrew, Courtney (Dan), Carolyn, and Ian. Also her brother Norris (Margaret) Edson, and her sister Maggie Walker, and many nieces and nephews. Rena loved travelling with Ralph and her family on cross-country trips to visit family in New Hampshire and California, and spent many weekends playing golf with her in-laws in Indiana. Later in life she and Ralph enjoyed several cruises to many locations. She was very outgoing and loved being with people whether playing cards, bingo, enjoying a cup of tea, or chatting about life. Her smile and humor could always lighten a situation. She was a true friend to family and friends, and we will miss her dearly, but are happy that she is reunited with family and friends and her Lord in Heaven. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Ohio Health Hospice - Kobacker House. Family will receive friends on Thursday, June 7, 2018 from 4:00PM-7:00PM at the SCHOEDINGER EAST CHAPEL, 5360 E. Livingston Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43232. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 4:00PM at the Centenary United Methodist Church, 102 E. Broadway, Granville, Ohio 43023. Graveside service at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens to be held at a later date. Please visit www.Schoedinger.com to share a memory of Rena.

Rena was a very dear friend to me and others from the workouts at Martha Morehouse. She and I hit it off and we even went on a cruise. We often went out to breakfast and lunch. I will miss her very much. I wish I could have seen her one last time. My prayers go out to her family.
