Richard DeLong Obituary

DeLONG Richard Braden DeLong, of Hilliard, Lakeside, and Orlando, FL, passed away on November 26, 2007. Dick was born May 21, 1934, in Cincinnati, OH, the only child of the late Lincoln Gregory DeLong and Dorothy Scott (Withers) DeLong. He graduated from Coshocton High School, and attended Ohio University, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Dick entered the military in 1954 and was assigned with the Seventh Division Army Band in Korea and then at the Presidio in San Francisco. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Helen Zielke DeLong; and two daughters, Deirdre of Oxford, OH, and Debra of Orlando, FL; sister-in-law, Karen Zielke Whyte (Bruce), Galloway; nephew, Chad Whyte, Columbus; a very special aunt, Erma Zielke, Paulding, OH; and many Zielke cousins. One of Dick's greatest interests was photography. He enjoyed the challenge of learning more in pursuit of the perfect picture. He retired from The Ohio State University, College of Engineering, as Editor of the News in Engineering magazine where his written words were accompanied by photographic stories. When asked a camera question, Dick would give the answer, and more. His creative talents extended to his love of art and music. He served as Choir Director for St. John Lutheran Church in Columbus, and was a member of the Columbus Maennerchor. An avid reader with a gift for words, he could be placed into the group of people referred to as "wordsmiths." What a word means, how is it spelled, how is it pronounced were questions Dick could always readily answer. The unique community of Lakeside, OH held a warm spot in his heart. There he enjoyed the friendship of some very special people. He was a member of Upper Arlington Lutheran Church, where a Service of Celebration of Dick's life will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, December 8, at 2300 Lytham Road, Columbus. Pastor Paul Ulring officiating. If desired, in lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests memory gifts be given to the Upper Arlington Lutheran Church/Youth Camps, or the Youth Ministry Program of Lakeside, OH 43440. I am very sorry to hear about the passing of your husband and I extend to you my deepest condolences. Dick was my cousin; I am Susie Frutig’s brother. It’s been a number of years since I last saw Dick. I drove over to your house to pick up my sister Sandy when she was stranded by a snowstorm. I believe my parents named be Gregory after Dick’s father Link.

Dear Helen,
I was so sorry to hear about Dick's death. I wish I had gotten to know him, you and your girls better. I remember him as this tall, good-looking young man in high school (I was in grade school, and was very impressed by him!) who was very nice and polite to me.
I am one of Dick's cousins, Susie DeLong. My Dad was Foster, Uncle Link's, youngest brother. I found out about Dick from another cousin, Jim DeLong, in Springfield. His mother, Fianna DeLong, died on Christmas Day, and he called to tell us and said he had seen Dick's obituary in the paper. We were very saddened to hear about it.
Please know that you and your daughters are in our prayers. I left my work email address (I am church secretary for Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in LaGrange) and I hope you or your girls email and we can get to know each other. Peace be with you.

Dear Helen, Although we have not known you very long, we consider it a privelege to have met and conversed with Dick and yourself. It was a pleasure spending time with him and we really enjoyed his views on numerous things. He had a very sweet and gentle spirit and we could tell he genuinely cared for our family. We pray that God's peace will surround you and your girls and give you strength to press on. Take care and God Bless you!

Mrs DeLong, I am so sorry to hear about Dick's passing this morning. He was a valued acquaintance of mine as it was always a pleasure to visit with him at the dealership and in fact, the first time I met him all we talked about were flowers instead of cars..It was something I'll never forget

Dear Helen: I am so sorry for your loss. Although I only knew Dick through you, it is clear he was a wonderful man. I am thankful for you that his final moments were spent with an angel in the form of a male nurse who sang hymns and carols to him. That is a beautiful way to leave this world and enter God's kingdom. Take care, Dear Friend.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to the DeLong family. I was extremely saddened reading about the passing of Richard. I first met Richard back in the 80's when I was managing an auto service store. One conversation lead to another and we discovered that we both had a love for photography. Boy did I get lucky because he was so knowledgeable about photography and loved to share it with me. We would talk for long periods of time and eventually his car would be done. He gave me some very good points and ideas that I still use today in my photography business. Even after I left the store whenever I saw him we would start all over again and chatter about our most favorite subject. I surely enjoyed all the talks we had and I will always remember him not only for his knowledge of photography but for the friendship we shared. God Bless him and family.

Helen, Deb and Dedre

I have many fond memories of my family spending time with yours as you all know, both in the USA and the UK.

I remember Dick mainly as a quietly spoken and gentle man that always had a stash of sweets that he was willing to share when I was a kid.

When I was younger he reminded me a bit of an america movie star from Clarke Gables generation; I am not sure why but I think it was the check trousers, smart jackets and the posh red car.

See you all soon

My husband, Al Bishop, was very fond of Dick. Al was Dept chair of I. E. for about 8 years, and we saw Dick at events where he was taking pictures. Always pleasant, nice to know. He even took special pictures for us, and gave us copies. My sincere sympathy to you on your loss.

Helen, Omega and I will continue to pray for you and your family. We feel blessed to have met Dick and visited with you both in your beautiful, and loving home in Hilliard. You and Dick will have a special place in our hearts. Helen in Psalms 116 we hear the words "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints". You know how precious he was to you, knowing that he is precious to God, has to be an added comfort. May God forever bless you and your family.

Helen, Deirdre & Deb -
I'm sorry for your loss. I so enjoyed the opportunity to get to know your husband and father. We had some great chats on the patio in Orlando and I'll always remember his teasing and especially his love of vegetables!!

It's always hard to say good-bye to a loved one, but the memories that you all made throughout the years will always be with you. May these bring you comfort during this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I knew Dick many years ago when he lived in Ironton. His interest then was photography, music, and the English language. We lost touch, and I am happy to learn he continued to pursue those interests and was successful following his rainbow. He was a kind soul.

My sympathies and condolences to the family. Dick and I played trumpet together in the Glouster High School band many years ago. Unfortunately, I lost tract of Dick after his family moved from Glouster. Dick and I spent many hours practicing trumpet together. Reading his obituary, I learned we were not that far apart. I wish we could have gotten together. Sorry that is no longer possible. Again, my deepest condolences.
