NORDSTROM Robert John Nordstrom, age 84, partner in the law firm Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur and former professor of law at Ohio State University died on Sunday, September 7, 2008, of complications from prostate cancer. He was born in Cadillac, Michigan on May 14, 1924, and grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan. He attended Western Michigan University before the onset of World War II. During the war, he served in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier in B-17 aircraft, attaining the rank of second lieutenant. After the war, he completed his undergraduate education and went on to law school at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1948 with Order of the Coif honors. He came to Columbus in 1951 as a member of the faculty of the College of Law at Ohio State, where he remained for 34 years. He was awarded the Outstanding Young Man of Columbus by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1958, and one of five in all of Ohio that same year. During his tenure as professor at OSU, he served on ma ny campus-wide committees, including chairing the Mershon Committee, and authored numerous texts and articles on law. Always dedicated to teaching, Robert earned the respect of his many law students over the years. He also devoted himself to teaching a young adult Bible study group at Maple Grove United Methodist Church, where his classes were filled to capacity. He is now a member of Overbrook Presbyterian Church. After his retirement from OSU, a chaired professorship was endowed in his name. He became a partner in the Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur law firm in downtown Columbus, where he remained active until his death. He is survived by his wife, Avis of 63 years, their three children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to show their respects should donate to the charity of their choice. Mr. Nordstrom was one of the smartest persons I have ever known. He taught me so much. He was a wonderful mentor and if he respected you and saw you had intelligence and street smarts, he faithfully had your back. Mr. Nordstrom looked for these qualities in the new associates who joined the firm. Of any of them showed less than what he expected of them, he moved on. If they were bright and creative, he took them under his wing and pushed them to be their best. He was a remarkable human being. I loved and respected this man, his lovely wife, Avis, and his three beloved children, Bob, Katherine, and Janet. Rest in peace, Bobby John. I shall always be grateful for the opportunity to grow under your guidance.
Paula (Linden) Carter-Jones, former legal secretary to Bob Nordstrom and later Attorney Personnel Director to the firm.

My heart goes out the the family. Mr. Nordstom was a great person. My Fridays were not complete until he stepped foot into the bank. He kept us all on our toes, especially when talking about the competition. I am blessd to have known such a wonderful man.

My deepest sympathies to Bob's family and to all who have had the privilege of being touched by this most extraordinary and gifted man. I was an associate at PWMA in the mid-1980s and am a walking testament to the fact that Bob did suffer this fool gladly. Apparently underwhelmed by my legal analysis on a particular assignment, but impressed nevertheless by my earnest delivery of the wrong legal conclusion, he stood up in his sartorial splendor, pulled a book from the shelf and handed it to me, and drolly said "Ms. Reid, you might want to READ this some day." "This" was Nordstrom on Sales. I still have that hornbook. Bob, you will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

Dear Avis
Even today I remember elements of what Bob taught me in 1952. I was also very proud when he became my
partner and honored when I came to know him as a friend.
My deepest sympathy.

My deep sympathies for Prof. Nordstrom's passing. He benefited so many in so many ways! Great man with such a great mind. Early in our class, some people switched seats to see if he really had the seating chart memorized, or just the few he was going to call on that day. He called them by name and asked them why they were confused about their seats. I still use his lessons almost daily. God Bless.

When someone asks me to explain the Socratic Method, I immediately see Professor Nordstrom in my mind, and my heart starts to beat a bit faster. I wouldn't dare to enter his class unprepared. We are all better lawyers as a result of his phenomenal teaching. (Class of 1976)

I remember my first day in Contract Law with Professor Nordstrom. He inspired and demanded the best from all of us and made us think as never before. He was a truly great teacher. I will remember him. I wish you peace in this difficult time.

Bob Nordstrom crafted his class in a manner which even now shapes my performance when confronted with Conflicts of Law issues. He mastered scholarship and teachings techniques which created a great classroom atmosphere. He and Roland Stenger?s Contracts introduced me to the methodology of the Socratic Method which I continue to pursue daily.

I was nostalgic upon the reference of this name and I am saddened at his passing. My sympathy to his family and the College of Law.

I'll never forget unilateral mistakes. One day in class he offered to sell his car for $1.00. Having walked by the parking lot while he arrived, I knew that would be a great deal. So I chimed in with an affirmative answer only to be handed a cigarette lighter with "MY CAR" engraved on the side. Although I was sorely disapointed, it was a valuable lesson. He was one of the best teachers I ever experianced and he will be missed.

I first encountered Professor Nordstrom on a September morning in 1976, when I reported for my very first law school class, in Contracts. What a memorable class it was, and likewise the entire course. He was a genius in the classroom. I've thought of him often during my own career in law and law teaching, and I will continue to do so.

I would like to extend my sympathies to the family in your loss. I am one of his law students (Class of 1975) who benefited from his teaching and built a career on the solid foundation he gave us. The influence of his Socratic method has provided the intellectual basis for the wonderful professional career I have enjoyed. For all who were close to him, I wish for you the sweetest memories of a man whose teaching touched so many of us.

I worked with Bob as a corporate client. He remained very demanding after he left the academic world - never afraid to speak his mind, always worth listening to, never suffering fools lightly, but kind if you earned his respect and wonderful to work with because of his wisdom and breadth of knowledge. A truly remarkable man.
