Robert Poe Obituary

POE Robert Poe. On Sunday, December 18, 2011, our dad Robert Poe, 78, lost his long and brave struggle, and passed at his home in Gahanna. He has joined his wife of 54 years, Carol and beloved son Bobby in a place of peace and love. He will be sadly missed by his children, Patsy (Steve) Conreaux, M.Cathy (Rick) Kish, Tim Poe, Kelly (Dan) Gonce and Angie Poe; 13 grandchildren, Michael (Karyn), Amy (Frank), Bo, Brian, Katie (Chris), Jennifer, Stephen, Rachel, Adam, Nicholas, Sean, Joseph and Eileen; and seven great-grand-children. Also, his sister, Jean (Chuck) Moon; brothers, Norman Poe and Dick (Julie) Cremeans; sister-in-law, Beverly Cremeans; and brother-in-law, Thomas Murphy. Preceded in death by brothers Charles Poe, Jerry Cremeans and sister Opal Poe. He had fond memories of his birthplace Guyandotte, WV. In January 1953, he married the love of his life and in July of that same year he joined the Air Force. After returning to civilian life he went to work for North American Aviation/Rockwell International, where he retired. Mom and dad loved to travel, especially to the Western states. He enjoyed his years as a little league coach for N.I.A.A. His greatest joy was his big family and close friends. Visitation is Wednesday, December 21, 2011, from 5-8 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Rd., Columbus, Ohio. Funeral will be Thursday at the funeral home at 10 a.m. with burial to follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Our family (the West family) grew up across the street (Matthias Drive) from the Poe Family, and I have many special childhood memories of all of us playing together, having great times, and growing up together. All of the memories are good ones (with the possible exception of when our street flooded, Bobby Poe had a head injury from playing basketball, and the paramedic came and took him out in a boat!) Thankfully he survived his ordeal! When I think of my memories of Bob Poe from my childhood, I always remember how nice he was to us kids, how he would help out anyone who needed it, and that he always seemed to be smiling. Our neighborhood was a better place to be, in part, because Bob Poe and his family lived there. God bless you all during this very difficult time. Having lost my father some years ago, I know how difficult it is. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers…

I really only knew Robert Poe through his daughter, Angie, but the gentleness in his voice told so much about the man--his tone was always polite, always sweet. I remember that he would shop for her--what a wonderful Father to have had! Bless him. He'll live on forever in her heart, I'm sure.

I will never forget the fond memories of Uncle Bob. He was one of the most fun people to be around. He was able to effortlessly make everyone else have a good time and feel welcomed. I know that Uncle Bob was well loved and respected. He had great character and a big heart. He is truly missed by everyone.

Now that it has been nearly a year since your passing, I can finally say something and not cry too hard to type. No one will ever know how much you suffered those last years. The loss of Bob and then Mom and your own failing health would have been too much for someone not as strong as you. You never gave up and fought your terrible illness all the way to the end. Your mind was sharp, and it was hard on us knowing you knew how bad things were, but you never complained, and tried hard not show how scared you must have been. I have never known, will never know anyone who loved life and wanted to go on as much as you. We did all we could to help keep you going, and together I think we worked a miracle of sorts....You loved Mom, we kids, your home, and your family members...and the Buckeyes, LOL. You were proud of the work you did, especially at North American/Rockwell. You loved politics, but hated liars, hence some great political debates--LOL. You loved to eat, and I can't look at ham and beans, steak, fried potatoes, fried fish or sausagae pizza without thinking of you:-) You were Patriotic and proud to have been in the service. Everyone loved you and that was important to you-to be liked and to be loved. I will never see another love like yours and Moms--although you could argue--LOL, it was special, all the way to the end. Knowing you are together in Heaven, with Mom and your "Golden Boy" Bob gives me some peace of mind. I miss you all every single day and I have discovered that there are days when I still want my mom and dad and my little brother. We will meet again:-)

I love you Dad.

No more suffering. He's in peace with the woman he loves! Ang & sisters, I'm sorry for your loss and all you've gone through the past few years. All is in God's time and we must accept this; know that special thoughts and extra gentle prayers are being sent your way.

My Mother has always called him Saint Robert. As a child, I remember him as a kind, quiet and watchful eye looking over us. We ran back and forth across the street on Matthias Dr. endlessly as, in those days, you couldn't get us to come inside! Seemed the Poe and Palmer kids were one big happy family and ‘Mr. Poe' was an ever present, but quiet, guardian! He will be sorely missed but I'm confident he is happy now, sitting side-by-side with Carol and Bobby doing what he always did best…..watching over us all!
