I was so shocked to hear of "Coach Toops" passing just recently. I first met Robert in middle school at Gahanna. I was new to the school and as I was walking down the hall, I remember him coming up to me and asking, "You're going to try out for the basketball team, right?". I hesitated at first, because I wasn't much into sports, but thanks to his nudge of support, I went on to become a part of a wonderful family of basketball friends. Coach helped me in so many areas of my life, including discipline (we were always in trouble lol- he would say "take off" and we would have to start running suicides), unconditional love, and a man that cared for his players as his own children. Thank you Coach Toops for your support and dedication to bettering my life. You will absolutely be missed! My thoughts and prayers are continually with your family and those that knew you. Rest peacefully.

We have known Bob his whole life. We played together as kids. We, Carolyn, Mickie, Vonnie and Paula were so shocked and saddened to learn of Bob's death all these years later while researching family history. Bob was our 1st cousin on his dad's side. Our mom and Bob's dad were brother and sister. Again, we are so saddened to hear about his death. You were loved and respected by many. A good man that we are proud to call our cousin. We wish we could have been there to say good-bye but we didn't know. Love you.

I was one of his student teachers in the fall of 2008. He was one of the best mentors I had. I was also a member of the Gahanna Keep Moving Team, and along with him participated in the New Albany Walkathon in 2009. I am so sorry to hear about his loss, and my heart goes out to his family. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Mr toopes family. Everyone at south loved him.I went to his showing and couldn't take it, as tears poured out of my eyes and past my cheeks i thought of toopsie and what he would be telling me "your killin' me chief." I was in MR. Toopes 6th grade science class JUST LAST YEAR.This is a hard thing to talk about. How could my FAVORITE TEACHER IN THE WORLD die!!We all loved him and wish this tragedy never happened. How could this happen i took a deep breathe or tried to at least.I didn't believe it when it happened then i came to school waiting to prove everyone wrong, anticipating to go to his room and give him the biggest hug in the world i watched the morning announcements and my world started to crumble. I LOVE YOU TOOPSIE <3!!! YOU WILL BE MISSED AND ALWAYS REMEMBERED!!

My husband John and I went to Ready with Bob. John played baseball with him and remembers his athletic spirit. I didn't know Bob very well. But, during the '70s, the Diocese conducted a series of weekend retreats called Teens Encounter Christ. One part of the weekend was a Saturday evening prayer service where those who had made earlier retreats came back to surprise and support their friends making the current retreat. Bob and I had made earlier retreats and returned to support someone (I'm embarrassed to say that I forget who), but I do remember that I drove my parents' white station wagon and we talked, laughed and sang on the way home. (Or I sang and Bob laughed.) It has occurred to me several times over the past week and a half that Bob is among the first of us to truly encounter Christ, which we believe is an extraordinary reward. But, as evidenced by the outpouring here and the never-ending line winding through the parking lot at the calling hours, his sudden death has had a profound effect on a lot of people and created a huge void in the lives of those closest to him. We pray that your family finds strength and peace in the days ahead. And to paraphrase a portion of an Irish blessing which was a favorite of my dad's (who was also named Bob and who encountered Christ in April of this year), "...until we meet again, may God hold [us] in the palm of His hand."

To the Toopes Family:
We were deeply saddened to hear the news about "Coach" Toopes passing. My son Griffin had him as a teacher at GMMS and my daughter Chloe was on his 8th grade girls basket ball team at GMMS. Toopes was loved by one and all. His passion for the kids was evident from the moment I met him. We count ourselves blessed to have had our lives touched by him and know he touched so many others as well. He made a positive impact on both of our children's lives and is someone that we will never forget.

God Bless you, Toopes Family! I was so sorry to hear that Bob had passed! I have known him for many years, through my children and through my job as a school bus driver for Gahanna Schools. Bob was a wonderful teacher and coach. Anytime I drove Bob and his class or team, he remembered me and my children, asked how they were doing... I have always had the utmost respect for Bob because he just knew how to be a good teacher and coach. I respected that he remembered me and my children and that he seemed truly interested in how we all were doing. My heart aches for you and you are in my prayers. If there is ever anything I can do to help you, please do not hesitate to call on me!
All my regards and respect,

Mr. Toopes was my 5th grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary. I have fond memories of him shouting, "SYC!" (Show Your Class) , and I also remember us always bugging him for Extra Recess, which we abbreviated "ER." When we would aske for an "ER" he would act like he had no idea what we were talking about and would dramatically ask, "An ER? Is somebody hurt?" I hope that my daughters get to have a such a kind, spirited, and gifted teacher as Mr. Toopes.
My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Bob always went out of his way to ask me "How you doin, kid?" everyday. He made me feel so welcome here at GMSS in my first 2 years of teaching. I always walked away from a conversation with him with a smile on my face. His genuine interest in people's well-being and kindness will be remembered forever. I am glad to say he was my friend.

Toopes was a man among boy's when it came to personality and honesty. He always had praise for my girls and he always had a smile. My favorite times with him were at basketball games where me and Toopes would talk about the Buckeyes and how our girls were doing in their sports. He genuinely loved people . I will miss him. We lost a good man. My sympathies, prayers, and thoughts are with his family. Let's grieve for him a short while...but remember him...forever.

Teri, Katie, Ryan, Dave, Ruth and Family,
My memories go way back to the Westside. When Bobby and Uncle Tim use to babysit me, hanging out at my Grandma & Grandpas house or at Helen & Ed's house. What a great time we all had the laughter was so heartfelt - true belly laughs, smiles all around what a great family and great person. I enjoyed seeing Bobby at the soccer games when Ryan and my son Cameron played against each other (DeSales & Ready) good games and fun hearing Bobby's laughter again.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Now heaven will ring with great laughter and wonderful stories. He can keep an eye on Ed, Helen, Rita and Foster.
God Bless you all.

Mr. Toopes was definitely the highlight of my middle school years. There was nothing like entering GMSS as a 6th grader - afraid of everything - and seeing Mr. Toopes bright, smiling face! We had so many memories that year. The girls bathroom having a fire and Toopes running out in the middle of class to put it out, dancing during our math bingo game, and laughing at his goofy interactions with other students. He was my favorite teacher.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Toopes family. We all know how much he'll be missed.

I met Bob about four years ago at a Science workshop and our paths crossed in classrooms and basketball courts throughout those years. Our relationship grew from being colleagues to become friends. At our last meeting he shared his love for and pride in his family. He did mention he was beginning to consider retirement. I am sad that you all did not get to share in this venture with him. He touched many lives, leaving quite a legacy... impossible to forget. My deepest sympathies go out to his wife, his children, his colleagues, and his students.

To my cousin Katie, Ryan and aunt Teri I wish so badly to be with you through this, I wish there was something I could say or do to take some of the heartache away. You are in my minute to minute thoughts and in my heart each night.
Bob to me was one of those rare people you meet that has the innate ability to make you feel comfortable and special for just being "plain 'ol you" Bob is one of the most selfless and understanding people I've ever had the privilege of having touch my life. I was fortunate and lucky to be able to call him a family member.
There are several moments that have been racing through my mind each day and night since his loss. Moments of great times shared together with him and my cousin Katie during our child hood, moments in which I was blessed to be able to experience his selflessness and understanding during my late teenage years and early 20's.
But the moment that stood out to me and has always had an important place in my heart for many personal reasons was during my sr. year of high school at DeSales for our sectional wrestling tournament. I had recently gone through an injury and this was my 1st attempt at wrestling again, I was in the finals wrestling a close match and the person I hear over the entire crowd is BOB screaming away, yelling and hollering like it was the Cleveland Browns in the super bowl. 4th quater, ball on the ten about to take it home. He was the person I looked to through out the entire match the person I could hear over everyone else. The match was nearing an end, it was close and on the line (I'm getting chills now thinking about the impact it had on me then as it does now writing this) I think Bob knew inside himself what I needed to pull this off, some how he not only in the end inspired me to win the match but inspired the entire gym to start a "chant" for the last min of the match which I dont think I ever saw happen at any Desales sporting event I've been apart of football, baseball wrestling in the 4 yrs I attended.
I'm sure I rambled, I just want everyone to know what a special person Robert Toopes is, Not only could he inspire one person to believe in themselves but he could inspire an entire gym full of people along the way...
Bob you will forever be in my heart and mind I will do my best to take what you've brought into my life and bring into others along this journey of life.
I love you and you will forever be missed.

Toopsie,
We at GMSS will miss you! You are an inspiration to us all! You were always willing to give your spirit and enthusiasm to the students of GMSS and all of the Gahanna School District....Jefferson Elementary, Gahanna Middle School East, Gahanna Middle School South and Gahanna Lincoln High School. A teacher, coach, and exceptional human being.....
At South we would ask you to participate in various situations such as dressing up as a frog, eating marshmallows and then singing a song, doing the hula hoop, getting a pie in the face....all for the good and fun of encouraging us all to reach our best and finest potential. You are one in a million. I always could count on you for a smile or good story. Your passions were lived each day. You are an inspiration to us all. I know that the word Toopsie has a meaning that will be far reaching as all of us try to live in the moment as you did.
My heart goes out to your family. What a rich and loving life you lived.

I had Mr. Toopes for sixth grade. He made such a difference in my life. Mr Toopes always believed in me when i was having problems with sports, school work, and even problems from home. There was nothing you couldnt go to him for help with or just to have a vent you knew you could trust 100%! He helped me get through physical rehab from a blown knew a few times and even came to my house once after my surgery to bring my work and explain it for me since i was unable to get to class. Even after graduation I always knew I could go to him for advice, and often did. Bob will be greatly missed, he was one of a kind, the greatest teacher, coach and mentor I could have ever imagined. My thoughts and prayers are with his family everyone else whose lives he touched so deeply.

I had Mr. Toopes in 5th grade at Jefferson in 1980, his second year at the school. I was so excited to have him for a teacher. He had a wonderful ability to understand his students strengths and weaknesses. 5th grade was my favorite year in school greatly because of Mr. Toopes. We actually convinced him to let us produce the play Annie during our recess. I'm pretty sure we only did it so we didn't have to go outside. We actually ended up performing it in the gym for some of the younger students that year. It takes a special teacher to extend the boundaries a bit and that was who Mr. Toopes was. He was very special and will be missed.

I had Mr. Toopes in 1980 for 5th grade at Jefferson, his second year at the school. I remember how excited I was to know he would be my teacher. I consider my 5th grade year one of or the best year of school I had. I do remember we convinced him to let us produce our own play during recess. I think it was so we didn't have to go outside. But he actually had us perform it in the gym for some younger students, not many teachers would have done that. He was a wonderful teacher and he had the ability to have an impact on everyone single student he taught. He really took the time to understand each and every one of us. He will be missed deeply.

I am so sorry about your loss. Mr. Toopes was my 5th grade teacher, my 7th grade girls basketball coach at Gahanna Middle School East, and my co- worker when I coached with him at Gahanna Middle School South. It was my first year coaching girls and he was so helpfull and not only did he teach me in school but in life. I will miss him very much.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Toopes passing. He was and always will be my favorite teacher. He made learning fun for me. But he was more than just a teacher. He was a good man and adored his family-always talking about them. Thank you Mr. Toopes for all the great 5th grade memories. You will be surely missed.

I had the priviledge of knowing Bob through school. He had all 4 of our kids in his class and they all loved him a lot. My son, Kyle, had a special connection with Mr Toopes and I appreciate everything he did for my children. You will be missed by the Strait Family and all those kids whose lives you have changed for the better. My God ease the pain his family feels but I hope they know he did his job here and will have a place for us in Heaven.

Coach Toopes was a fantastic person and will be missed by many, many people. He coached my daughter in basketball this summer and she always said that she could tell that Coach Toopsie cared about the girls on and off the court. My daughter would always see Coach Toopes in the Kroger and they would talk, joke and laugh. She always walked away happy and smiling because of Coach Toopes. We were all so blessed to have him in our lives! To his family, I am so sorry for your loss. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

I had Mr. Toopes as a 6th grade teacher. I remember Mrs. Lewis and him always joking around with each other! The first time i met Mr. Toopes was at a Gahanna basketball camp he called me little bit! Then in 6th grade i got him as a teacher and he called me squirt! Mr. Toopes taught me to always show my class. Mr. Toopes made everyone smile and was a great man. I'm really going to miss him. The Toopes family will be in my thoughts and prayers. I will always remember you Toopsie! I luv u!!!

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Toopes passing. He was my first student teacher back in the mid 70's at Beechwood Elementary in Whitehall and ironically worked with my father(John Boesch) at Krogers. I was in trouble for failing algebra. Needless to say, Mr. Toopes made sure that I learned what I needed and more before he left our classroom that year!!! I was so sad to see him go. What an awesome teacher. I will never forget him and all the things he taught me. Anyone who had him as a teacher is very blessed to have known him and learned from him. I balled my eyes out when I learned of his passing, but we all have an angel watching over us now! God bless your family.

I loved Mr. Toopes so much. He was the teacher that made me excited to come to school every single day. I'll never forget the crazy fun science experiments that we did (burning laffy taffy!). I never had a class with him that I didn't laugh or smile in. And of course, he had his rampages against the Steelers, and his love for the Browns. After sixth grade, I visited him as much as possible, loving when I came in and he would call me "Bear" (short for "Care Bear"). He gave all his students nicknames, which I think everyone enjoyed. Although Mr. Toopes has passed, I think his life on earth will forever be cherished by the ones that knew him. God has truely been blessed to be with Mr. Toopes again, and my prayers extend to his family and friends. Love you, Toopsie. I'll never forget you.

Dear Teri,
Or "T" as Bob would lovingly refer to you. It is with great sadness that I send this note to you and your children. Please accept our deepest sympathy. It was always fun teaching with Bob. He, Eric Vaas, and I had many special moments teaching fifth graders at Jefferson Elementary. The kids loved him and so did we. He was born to teach and inspire those students each and every day. He was dedicated to them and loved them all as his own and they eagerly flocked around him knowing they had a teacher who cared. God be with you all and may He grant you courage and peace. Bob will always be remembered lovingly by all who knew him. He was a good man.
Fondly, Mayme and Paul Gigl

What lovely words to describe an even more wonderful person. I have not seen Mr. Toopes in several years, but he has been described over and over again exactly how I remember. Smiling, laughing, dedicated, and proud. He was an inspiration to us all, and will be forever in our hearts.

Mr.Toopes is a well known man and many people loved him. I have never met anyone that ever said that they hated or didn't like him. My brother who is now a sophmore had him as a teacher and loved going to his class. I didn't have him as a teacher but i got to know him just by going through the Halls. I thank him for giving me the nick name Jazzy-Jass. He might not be here in the flesh but know he is still here, and it's shown through every student that knew him in any kind of way. R.I.P. Mr. Toopes another soul gone, but never forgotten.

We are so sorry for your loss of such an amazing man. My daughter, Alyssia, is in his 6th grade homeroom this year at GMSS. She adored him as a teacher. Mr. Toopes was able to get her to understand and like Social Studies, which has been a struggle for her in the past. Now, thanks to Mr. Toopes, she has straight A's instead of that dreaded B or C in Social Studies she usually got! I know that he made a wonderful, positive impact in her life and he will be greatly missed. I am glad that she had the honor to know such a kind, caring man and extraordinary teacher. She is having a very difficult time dealing with the loss of her favorite teacher. Our family will be keeping your family in our prayers during this difficult time.

My son is a current student at GMSS and had Mr. Toopes as his teacher for Science & Social Studies as well as homeroom. My family was just getting to know Mr. Toopes, but we could tell right away how good he was with the kids. After reading so many of the other entries, it seems that everyone felt the same. I'm sorry that my son will not get the benefit of being with Mr. Toopes for the remainder of the year, but I am grateful for the time he did have. He will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. This is a tremendous loss, both personally and to the community. He's touched so many lives.

I remember when my daughter was coming in to South and how nervous she was to have Mr Toopes as her teacher and through out the year how she grew to love him! What an amazing influence he became in her life! He was a great teacher, extremely funny and was loved by so many! He will be missed in so many ways! My prayers are with his family, and for all of those at GMSS, and all of the students that loved him! May he Rest In Peace.

I had the pleasure of knowing Bob through the Gatsby Golf League at the airport. Bob loved playing golf and always hated hole no 3 due to the double water. He will be missed by all of us in the Gatsby Golf League. May God comfort his family in this time of sorrow and provide peace during your loss.
Bob may you rest in peace!!!

Katie,
I am so sorry to have just learned of the loss of your dad. He was such a sweet man. I remember the first time I met him at your house for the big 4th of July party. He made me feel so welcome. And I can't think of your dad without thinking of him eating burnt popcorn in the garage! You will be forever grateful for the short time you moved back home and spent with him. You have accomplished so much in your short life and I'm sure your dad was and is very proud of you. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
