Ronald Hals Obituary

Hals, Ronald M.
1926 - 2019
The Reverend Dr. Ronald M. Hals, born on September 4, 1926, passed away on Saturday, February 23, at Wesley Ridge. He was professor emeritus of Trinity Lutheran Seminary where he served for over 30 years as a professor of Old Testament theology. Ron was the first non-Jewish graduate from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was beloved by a great many of his students. In his retirement he provided continuing education to many pastors around the country. Ron was easily recognizable by his signature beret. He was preceded in death by his parents Rolf and Doris Hals and his wife Laura (Fahrenolz). He is survived by sons, Eric (Betty) and Gary (Pam); five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Sunday, March 3, after the 11 am service a light lunch will be provided. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lutheran World Relief.

Rev Donald R Rice, Paris, Ohio: To the family of Dr Hals: Dr Hals and I roomed together at Capital University and Seminary. I knew his mother and father, his wife and met their sons in early childhood. I will be 94, July 20th and look forward to meeting him in heaven. God bless and comfort you and your families.

Dr. Ronald M. Hals was a role model for anyone who wished to serve others as a pastor and as a teacher. I had the good fortune to be his student at Trinity Seminary. He was a prime example of a professor who came to class each day totally prepared. He had four loves: his Lord, his family, his students and the St. Louis Cardinals. I thank God he was a part of my life.

Dr. Hals was my teacher. I will never forget how he prayed before every class. He helped me get into graduate school. I would not be who I am today without his model and guidance. He was a unique spirit and I am so glad I got to know him. He will be missed

Ron Hals was my professor 1967-1970 and a mentor for the formative years of my own career as an Old Testament teacher. He introduced me to the great German biblical scholars (Alt, Bultmann, Noth, von Rad) when they were still little known in this country and taught me how the Old Testament works as God's word of Gospel for the church. Zeker tzadik librakah.

I really appreciated Dr. Hals as my OT professor in seminary. We students welcomed his jokes at the beginning of each class. We learned a lot from his vast background.

Dr. Hals was my advisor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary. I felt blessed by the way he encouraged me while I was a student at TLS. His classes were always challenging and at times his insights into what we were discussing just made me stop and ponder. Of course his love of God always shone through. Even upon his retirement we would visit with him and Laurie. He was a guest teacher at Good Shepherd, Cincinnati, Ohio quite a few times while his son Gary was in medical school at UC. He will be missed for many reason but I will always appreciate the way he helped me grow in my understanding of the OT and the prophets and God's grace and love.

May God's love and peace surround Ron's family as they entrust him to God's eternal care.
