Saad Nagi Obituary

Nagi Saad Z. Nagi was born April 30, 1925, in a small village in the Egyptian Nile Delta. After enjoying a full and rich life, he died February 9, 2017 in Dublin, Ohio, in his home of 52 years. Leaving Egypt at age 29, with the help of a Fulbright scholarship, he continued his education in Agriculture Extension and Sociology spending the next 35 years at The Ohio State University in the departments of Sociology and Physical Medicine focused on Medical Sociology. Retiring in 1990, he shifted his attention to political and social development and returned to Egypt to work with The American University in Cairo, and later, with various international organizations. The common thread in his life was the conviction that to educate oneself and be treated with dignity in life are human rights. He was a lifelong educator and seeker of knowledge and took great pleasure in interacting with students, colleagues, family and friends from every corner of the world. He enjoyed every minute of this journey. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kay; daughter, Karima Nagi Rogers (Joe); sons, Mazen (Elvi Handayani), and Omar (Sunita Bose); and four grandchildren, Alexandria, Kendall, Peyton, and Khadija; in addition to siblings, Duria and Mustafa in the US, and Saby, Fatima, Safwat, Gamila, and Aza in Egypt. His 36 nieces and nephews, both here and in Egypt, have enriched our lives immensely. His entire family will miss his love and kindness and joy of life. A memorial Service will be held, the time and place will be posted on Saad's website, sznagi.com. In lieu of flowers to the family, donations can be made in his memory to Doctors Without Borders or the ACLU.

I have long appreciated the pioneering work Dr. Nagi did in investigating the Social Security Disability program** and will continue to strive for improvements in our treatment of persons who find themselves unable to work. We need more people like him and will miss him.

Saad was a great friend, colleague and mentor. I came to Ohio State in 1986 in part through his urging and greatly enjoyed the many fine lunches, discussions and meetings over the years where we discussed issues such as world poverty, democracy and measures to counter these problems. Saad was an inspiration for all of us and did much to create a genuine intellectual community at Ohio State sociology. He will be greatly missed.
