Sonja Scott Obituary

Scott Sonja Margareta Scott, the daughter of German immigrants, was born to Fredrich and Margaret (Rehschuh) Butenhoff August 19, 1938 in Queens, NY. She died at First Community Village September 13, 2015 after a brief illness. Sonja attended Hunter College High School in Manhatten's Upper East Side before graduating from Cornell University (1961), where she met her husband of 57 years, Roy. After Roy completed his PhD at Cornell they lived on Oahu, Hawaii where Roy was a professor at the University of Hawaii. They permanently settled in Upper Arlington after Roy took a professorship at The Ohio State University. Sonja was an avid gardener, bridge player, puzzler, reader of mysteries, and fan of the Poldark series. There wasn't a crossword puzzle she couldn't master nor a plant or flower she couldnt identify. She passed down her passion for colonial era decorating and design to her daughter, Sonja. She loved birdwatching and all of the creatures that inhabited her backyard gardens. She reveled in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren and enjoyed travelling to support them in their endeavors. Sonja also enjoyed international travel. Her most memorable journey was the 2001 trip to Egypt with Roy and Stuart for its amazing history and culture, and because of its unique timing during the 9/11 attack. She is survived by Roy; daughter, Sonja (Dr. David) Baehren, Toledo; son, Stuart (Susan) Scott, Cleveland; and grandchildren, Ensign Benjamin (Grace) Baehren, Oahu and Sarah Baehren. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the friendship and care provided by their physician and neighbor, Dr. Paul Dusseau, and his wife, Claudia. They also thank the entire staff at First Community in Upper Arlington, and particularly nurse Jessica, for her compassion while caring for Sonja in her final days. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to either Alley Cat Allies at www.alleycat.org or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (ASPCA) at www.aspca.org. The family will receive friends at their home located at 3680 Kennybrook Lane in Upper Arlington on Thursday, September 17 from 6-9 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to SCHOEIDNGER NORTHWEST.

Stu and Susan,

So sorry for your loss of your mother. She still lives on in the backyard that I enjoy everyday. Black eyed Susan's and beautiful roses. She left a great impact of beauty. Our prayers are for you to know the peace she left for you to enjoy.
Emulating warm hearts to you,

Tami and Jack
