Sven Fougner Obituary

FOUGNER Sven Fougner, 96, died Thursday, October 31, at the Healthcare Center at the Forum at Knightsbridge after a brief illness. A man of intense curiosity about the world around him, he was a source of joy to those who met him. He loved to share his experiences and discoveries with his children and grandchildren. He was a naturalist, a dedicated bridge player; he loved golf and tennis; he had a passion for music as well as for woodworking. He was never bored. Mr. Fougner was born in Oslo, Norway, in 1911 to Supreme Court Justice Sigurd Fougner and Karen Collett Fougner. He received his education in Oslo and his degree in chemical engineering at the Technische Hochschule Karlsruhe (Germany), now the Karlsruhe University. He brought his family to the United States in 1949 when he became President of the Norsk Hydro Sales Corporation, a division of Norsk Hydro. Through his work and interest, he became a world-recognized expert in magnesium and light metals technology, and in 1962 he left Norsk Hydro to establish his own consultancy, Magnalith Corporation. The family resided in Garden City on Long Island, New York, for almost 30 years. Later years were spent in Connecticut and most recently over 8 years at the Forum.. Mr. Fougner is predeceased by his first wife, Lucie Getz Fougner. He is survived by his former wife Harriet Welhaven, daughters Kari (Bill) Inglis, Columbus; Cici Hunt, Boston; Kiki (Peter) Karpen, Darien, CT; and sons Jan (Ragnhild), Svein (Jean), and Peter (Louise) Fougner. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Forum at all levels of residency. Their care, support and affection for him over his years there were among the happiest of his later years. A memorial service is being planned at the Forum for a later date. Arrangements completed by the NOVAK FUNERAL HOME, 268-8811. www.novakfuneralhome.com "Sign the online guestbook at www.dispatch.com/obituaries"

Kari and others of Sven's family:
Being a fellow male resident of The Forum at Knightsbridge -- and there are not too many of us! -- as well as a quarter Norwegian by ancestry, I remember Sven very fondly. I remember his 90th birthday party when he dressed up in traditional Norwegian garb and treated all of us residents to a party. I frequently went to his apartment for conversation and drinks after dinner.
And he was a joy at Monday's Coffee & Conversations when he would bring pages from the N.Y. Times marked up for Judy Long [or her predecessors as activities coordinators] to read. We'll all miss him!
Thanks for sharing your Dad with us.

Your father was a dear friend and neighbor of mine at the Forum. We had so much fun playing bridge together. He will be greatly missed. I extend you my condolences and sympathy.
