VAN FOSSEN Theodore van Fossen. A memorial ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at the HINDMAN FUNERAL HOME, 1521 Frankstown Rd., Johnstown, Pennsylvania for Theodore Waltermire van Fossen, the designer of Rush Creek Village in Worthington and other houses in Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and California. Mr. van Fossen died at the age of 91 on December 9, 2010, of natural causes at a residential care home in Ebensburg in western Pennsylvania, a region where he had lived for five decades. He was born in Columbus on October 19, 1919 and attended the Ohio State University and its University High School, as well as the New Bauhaus School in Chicago. He extended the architectural principles of Frank Lloyd Wright and designed Rush Creek Village, the largest and most successful residential community of organic architecture. The National Park Service placed it on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 and it gained further prominence in 2004 when it was featured in a long New York Times article. Mr. van Fossen's architectural plans and documents will be held at the University of Minnesota's archives. He is survived by his son, Anthony of Brisbane, Australia; and also by his brother, Albert in Columbus. His son, friends, and relatives will miss him beyond words.
