San Francisco, CA - Dennis D. Powell, 72 of San Francisco, California passed away on April 9, 2021 at CMPC, VanNess Hospital in San Francisco.
Dennis was born in Dodge City Kansas on May 11,1948 to Marion and Frances Powell. Dennis grew up on a farm near Cimarron, Kansas and was Salutatorian of his graduating class of 1966 in Cimarron, Kansas. He went to Wichita State University where he studied foreign languages, and was president of the French Club. After graduation, he received a scholarship to teach English as a foreign language at Sorbonne University in Paris, and he also had an opportunity to teach at the National School of Business. After his time in France, Dennis lived in New York before moving to San Francisco where he got a job writing restaurant reviews as a freelancer.
Dennis then got a job as a food critic at the San Francisco Chronicle. Dennis worked at the San Francisco Chronicle for more than 25 years with the last 17 years in the advertising department where he dealt with the financial, retail and arts and entertainment industries
Dennis loved to travel, antique shop, tend to his beautiful plants and garden, and have lunch with friends. Dennis loved the arts and he was was a very good artist. Dennis was an amazing chef and loved to prepare delicious meals for friends and family.
Dennis is survived by three sisters, Bonnie Stotler and Sondra Brown of Dodge City, Kansas and Vicky Ramsay of Fargo, North Dakota and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
A celebration of life with family and friends will be held in Dodge City, Kansas on June 15 at the American Legion hall beginning at 10:30 a.m. and lunch will be provided.
