I wish somebody would call me now that Susan`s gone and let me know about the house in Lake Sylvia I´d love to go there or be a part of it. Hopefully your wife and Danville will give me a call. I just don´t have her phone number, but I miss you, buddy. We had great road trips and road trips . You were my guy rest in peace buddy.

I extend my heartfelt sympathy to your family. As you celebrate David's life, may you reflect his unconditional love for each of you. 1st Corinth 13:4-7 reads, "Love is long-suffering and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, does not get puffed up,does not behave indecently, does not look for its own interests, does not become provoked. It does not keep account of the injury. It does not rejoice over unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." You are in my prayers.

To Karen, your daughters, and to Jim... I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't think anything can really prepare us to lose someone we love like this. Your family will be in my prayers in the weeks ahead as all of you grieve Dave's loss. Teresa Stephens McCrae (Del Valle '75)

Dave and I have been friends since the 70's. We met by chance while my girlfriends and I were teepeeing his condo. We became friends after Stokes caught us and made us help clean up. The friendship came naturally, we both loved cars and had Mustangs. Friendship was one of his special gifts. He genuinely cared about everyone and made lifelong friends effortlessly. We have remained great friend ever since, something I am truly grateful for.

During my last conversation with Stokes he told me how blessed he was to have found the love of his life Karen. He loved her and his family. When he spoke of them I could truly hear the love in his voice. Stokes loved life...he lived it with all his heart. He was so grateful to have accomplished the things he wanted most...to have a wonderful loving family, become a firefighter and to own more Fords than he could fit in his garage. Karen almost jinxed the Ford deal, when she allowed him to build "Hoser's Garage". But he took the challenge and filled it as well !

Karen, Chrissy, Andrea, Renee and Lauren, I hope you find great comfort in the fact that you were his Pride and Joy. He love you all very much.

Stokes, my forever friend you will be missed....my life won't be the same without you! I was touched by your warm smile and comforted by your friendship. Until we meet again my dear friend...you will live eternally in my heart.

I knew Dave initially through my brother Julian. He was a nice & fun loving guy. I do remember in High School going to an auto & truck show that he proudly entered his beautifully restored small pick up. He seemed to be in his element that day. I lost touch over the years but it doesn't make it any easier to know that he is gone. My heartfelt thoughts go out to his family during this difficult time. Lots of friends & family will miss you!

My husband (Chrissy's Grandfather and I were in the room with Dave and Chrissy's mother when Chrissy was born. Dave couldn't wait to hold her. He was a sweet and loving guy and I cannot begin to say how sad I am that he is gone. A light has gone out in the world. I know that Dave is with my husband now, holding Dave's parents near. Goodbye my friend, the thought that you were always there to protect us has not vanished.

In the '70's, Dave joined the fraternity of crazy power boat racers, driving a class called 'Jersey Speed Skiff'. He, and the other two Jersey drivers in northern CA, were at every race. He gave it all he knew, but for a while had more than his share of mishaps. I had the rescue boat for all of northern Ca and I had to pull him out of the water more than once. Thank goodness he was never seriously hurt.
Being the person he was, he kept learning and improving, finally winning some races.
I hope the Good Lord is letting him carry a checkered flag while he is in heaven. Dave deserves one.

I have many memories with Dave. The high school years in auto shop. The working years when Dave worked with me in the parts dept of Berkeley Nissan. We spent many mornings commuting from Walnut Creek to Berkeley. I lived at Dave's condo for a year or so. Then there was the racing years as my brother Richard and I got dave hooked on speed boat racing. Oh the many road trips to race's all over California. Randy, funny you mention the Holy Grail. It was Dave who talked me into watching this classic movie and I to learned many of the lines from it.In honor of Dave, I will go see it here in Modesto at the State Theatre. They show classic movies redigitized on the big screen. Dave lived here in Modesto for a while, so we were able to do things on a regular basis. I had been emailing with Dave last year. That is when i found out he was battling cancer. He was going to try to come to a boat race and visit with his old racing commrades. As we all know, Daves lifelong dream was to be in the fire dept. To my knowledge he served many years with Orinda and was a captain when he had to retire from duty.
Dave was a tower of a man. I for one are darn glad I was able to share so many things with him.

I met Dave (Stokes) at the insurance office I used to work at in Concord.Someone had to insured all of his toys/hobbies. I know he will be greatly missed by the ladies in the office. My heart goes out to Karen and your girls during this time of sorrow.
He fought a long fight and the inevitable always seems to win.
I am sorry for your loss he was a great man.

Probably my best memory of Dave was when he owned the Meyers Manx; had to be the late 1970's. Dave let me borrow the Manx and in my care, the throttle cable broke off. He and I had to drive it home from Concord, him steering and me hanging off the back manually working the carburetor. With no throttle control, he demonstrated his ability to control the vehicle at high speed in all situations. We laughed like hell all the way back to the condo in Walnut Creek. There was a time I think Stokes knew every line to the "Holy Grail". Makes me laugh now just remembering him quote from the movie in his way, not to mention watching him try to light a bunsen burner in Mr. Geertsons chemistry class as juniors at Del Valle. Dave, we had some epic times. HO slot cars, cruising the Main in the GTX, that summer with Ed Hoogs; you were the Best Man in my wedding. We had some fun in San Diego and Texas too. What a fine job you did raising your girls. I am privileged to have been considered your friend and was formed by your friendship. I will miss you terribly. "My Boy"
