Richard Terry Obituary

Richard Terry
Mar. 23, 1937 - Mar. 5, 2017
Resident of Pleasant Hill
Rich was born in Sacramento, CA on March 23, 1937. He passed away at home with his family after a short battle with lung cancer. He always remained positive and never complained.
He was raised in Walnut Grove, CA. He eventually moved to Oakland, then to Richmond, finally settling in Pleasant Hill for the last 45 years of his life.
In his early years, he was very active in Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout Badge.
He graduated from Richmond Union High in 1955. He then went on to attend Contra Costa College. He started out going to work for the City of Richmond Parks Department in 1956 but eventually moved on to work for Contra Costa County Sherriff's Department in 1965. He worked most divisions before becoming a Homicide Investigator and Assistant Division Commander at the Coroner's Office. After a distinguished career he retired in 1992.
He was a devout 49er fan and season ticket holder for 60 years through good times and bad. He loved sports and working in his yard.
He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband of Joan (Nielson) Terry for 59 years, loving father of Dale and Tracy, Grandfather of Courtney, Brittany, Adam and Austin. Great Grandfather of Rose. Father-in-Law to Christine and Jane, brother of Telford Terry and sister Donna DeLong. He was predeceased by his father and mother Ernest and Muriel Terry, and brother Ernie Terry
He was much loved and respected by everyone in his personal and work life, including his dog Heidi who was always by his side.
Services will be held at Queen of Heaven Cemetery on March 25th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in his name.

Sergeant Terry was one of my Sheriff Department supervisors who always greeted you with a smile and a friendly gesture. He always wanted to know if he could assist you or your family and was very sincere in his concern. Rich was a great leader and friend. He will sorely missed by many. God Bless Rich and his family. Thank you Rich for your faithful service to the citizens of Contra Costa.
