I met Brian at an apartment complex in Saratoga, CA where we both lived sometime around 1977. I was an athlete as well, but barely 20 years old. For whatever reason this world class monster of a personality made a point to befriend me. We occasionally trained together at DeAnza (with John Powell) and he always made a point to invite me over for one of his special banana protein shakes that I can still taste today. He was always thinking of others! I moved away in 1980 and never saw him again. For whatever reason in late January of this year (37+ years later) I started thinking of him and wondered how he was doing. I found his Facebook page and instant messaged him. He didn't respond, but oh how I wish he had. What a special person. What a special friend. RIP

Brian was a Legend, Guru, Coach, friend, strongman, sprinter, entertainer, free spirit . Brian would talk to me and speak in artistic detail about throwing the shotput and speak about throws from 1975 as if it was yesterday. Brian would coach or speak to anyone to help them throw farther. One of the biggest honors I had is when Brian spoke about me in his blog on his web page BrianOldfield.com ., he told me he was making his blog into a book someday. Hopefully his friend George publishes his book . After reading his blog and every time we talked about a different chapter in his life it inspired me to be the best version of myself. Every time I trained with Brian Or talked on my drives home from work my training would always get better. I wished we had more time with him , he will be missed by so many. Brian Oldfield was my hero! As a young athlete, I could never of imagined actually meeting him. As I became more proficient in throwing the javelin my sphere of friends evolved. I was blessed to know him as a mentor, Big brother, and most importantly, as MY friend.

I followed Brian's success through my Sports Illustrated subscription during the 70s and was truly impressed. The highlight was seeing him compete at the Drake Relays in the same time period. He seemed to be bigger than life. God Bless his family and know he touched many in life.

In the glorious years that Brian spent living here in The San Jose area of California, we competed fiercely against one another. We also spent a number of Thangsgivings together with other throwers here at my place in the Santa Cruz Mts. sharing food and outlandishly good times in laughter. Brian was not only one of the most gifted and unique throwers of all time , but I can personally tell you that he was generous with sharing whatever he had , as well his knowledge of training and technique. My condolences to all of Brian's family and friends...Rest in Peace , Big O!

Brian and I were classmates in Elgin High School's Class of 1963. He was a unique individual, and it was fun to follow his athletic career over the years that followed. He is our class's representative in the Elgin High School Hall of Fame, and he will be remembered by us all. My condolences to his family.
