Catherine Manley Obituary

With heavy hearts and fond memories, we announce the passing of Catherine "Cathy" Jean Manley, who left us on July 11, 2025, in Alexandria, Virginia, at the age of 66. Born on Sept. 25, 1958, in Elkhart, Indiana, Cathy was a vibrant soul known for her incredible kindness, humor, and generosity.

Cathy was the cherished daughter of the late Emmett and Virginia Manley and beloved sister of Carolyn Manley, who resides in Middlebury, Indiana. She remained deeply connected to her family, often returning to her roots in Indiana to support her parents and visit her sister and her partner, Tom Cogan, at their Dogtown Resort business.

Cathy's journey was marked by her immense passion for music, education and nurturing young talent. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston, supplemented by coursework at the prestigious Juilliard School and Columbia University in New York City.

In 1998, she began a fulfilling teaching career at Burgundy Farm Country Day School in Alexandria, Virginia, where she remained a guiding light in the lives of many students. Cathy's influence extended far beyond the classroom, as she also played a vital role in local theater productions with West Potomac High School's Beyond the Page Theatre Company, Metro Stage, Mount Vernon Community Children's Theatre and Aldersgate Church Community Theater. Her work as a church musical director at Mount Vernon Methodist Church and Virginia Hills Baptist Church allowed her to share her gifts with the community.

Over the years, Cathy mentored thousands of students, many of whom went on to become performers and music educators themselves. Her nurturing spirit, combined with a unique ability to connect with individuals, instilled confidence and self-esteem in those she taught. As one student beautifully expressed, "I'm better because you were a part of my life. Thank you. You are loved." Another noted, "Cathy ALWAYS encouraged me and spread joy and love."

When she wasn't teaching or mentoring, Cathy immersed herself in the beauty of nature. She relished her time spent outdoors, exploring the breathtaking Shenandoah National Park and the scenic coast of the Carolinas. Cathy shared her life with her beloved little dog, Taffy, who became a cherished companion and a bridge to a larger community of friends.

To celebrate Cathy's remarkable life, a Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, Sept. 13, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1301 Collingwood Road, Alexandria, VA 22308. In her memory, her ashes will be placed near the gravesite of her parents at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart, Indiana, where she found her roots and drew inspiration throughout her life.

Cathy Manley was a beacon of joy, encouraging others to shine and embrace their unique gifts. She leaves behind an inspiring legacy filled with love, laughter and harmony that will resonate with all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her spirit will forever be remembered in the hearts of her students, friends and family.

My sympathy to Carolyn and family. I knew both of you over the years first after knowing your parents for years at Trinity United Methodist Church and other community events thru the years. You were all a very musical fun family.
