James Welch Obituary

~Beloved Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Friend~

Jim Welch, long-time Elko resident passed away on December 24 in his home following a long illness. He was born in November of 1929 in Bridge, Idaho to Art and Lucille Welch.
They moved to Elko in 1946 where he attended Elko High School. At that time he worked at Slim Olsen's and with John Perry making saddles before he enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 21. He came back to Elko in 1953 and started dating the love of his life, Cherie Porter, whom he married in 1954. He went to work for California Pacific Utilities and retired after 37 years. He served the city of Elko as a volunteer fireman for many years. He also ran the stockyards for 5 years before they were torn down; and volunteered his time working at the fairgrounds for nearly half of his life. Shortly; after he retired form the phone company he went to work for the Elko County Sheriff's Department, where he worked for over 14 years. Jim enjoyed braking colts to earn extra money for the family. He was a wonderful husband and father. He has many, many, friends who will miss him.
He is preceded in death by his sister Colleen and his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Cherie, daughter Kathleen, son Jim, grandson Thor (Christy), great-grandchildren TJ and Kylee Welch, brothers Allen and Virgil Welch, and many nieces and nephews.
Special Thanks to: Neil and Janell Harris, Bill Webb, Dr. George Manilla, Nancy Porter and Family, Mike and Melinda Borden, whose help and friendship have been invaluable.
A memorial service is pending and will be announced at a later date. Jim's request was to donate to a local 4H Club or a High School Rodeo Club of your choosing instead of sending flowers.

I had the distinct pleasure to work at CP/Alltel since 1975 -82. Jim was a hard worker and stout of hand and mind. I never liked shaking those huge "killer" hands of his.The only things on earth I know that got the best of him in life was a Black Widow spider (Oregon vintage) and a billy goat that "nailed him from behind" without notice. He rescued my wife from a huge bull snake that was in our yard and taught me how to sing squaredance music. He was a Master of "The Auctioneer". If you knew Jim as intimidating, you never really knew him. And for those I know who hear my stories know Jim and Cherie "we're the best next door neighbors (78-82) Gerry and Linda Knapp ever had"! We love their whole family and will miss Jim greatly!
