Sammy Abdou Obituary

Sammy Nicklis Abdou III

El Paso - Sammy Nicklis Abdou III, 73, of El Paso, TX passed away on August 28th after a hard-fought battle with Parkinson disease.

Sammy was born on May 11th, 1947 to Sam and Rose Abdou. After graduating from El Paso High School in 1965, he went to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX where he received a business degree. He was self-employed for his entire working career and spent the rest of his life in his native hometown of El Paso.

Sammy adored his family. He took great pleasure in spending time with his nieces and nephews sharing his favorite music while showing them fancy dance moves. They are forever grateful for all the life lessons that Uncle Sambo shared with them. "Never sign your name with red ink, be professional on the phone so they know you mean business and don't ever forget your Spanish" are just a few. Sammy enjoyed conversing with others and would often take notes on the discussion using his ever present yellow legal sheet and pocket pen. He had a gift of listening to others. Another favorite past time was watching classic movies and he especially looked forward to the Plaza Film Festival every year.

He is survived by his sister Patsy Sanders and husband Bill, sister Sandra Abdou, brother Eddie Abdou and wife Karen, brother Robert Abdou and wife Molly. Sammy has five nephews Brent Sanders (wife Susanne), Weston Sanders, Amen Abdou, Phillip Abdou and Nick Abdou and three nieces Sabrina Crowley (husband Sean), Kate McNeely (husband Ryan) and Ashley Graves (husband Scott).

We love you and you will be missed Sambo!

I just recently became aware that Sammy had passed. I met Sammy in August of 1970 and we dated until I moved to Hawaii with my roommates in August of 1971. I married and moved to San Francisco in 1973. I divorced in 1976 and Sammy and I connected again. We were friends and he even came to visit me in San Francisco once. I would go back to El Paso to visit family every couple of years and we would have lunch or coffee each time and would also stay in touch from time to time on the phone. I got married again in 1990 and we lost touch with each other. The things I remember about Sammy are that first, he was very, very kind to me. He loved music and I remember he especially loved the Neil Diamond song "Shiloh". I think he might have taken me to see Neil Diamond at UTEP when he used to perform there! He truly loved his family. He invited me to a family gathering - I think it was New Years Eve 1977?. The parents were out of town and the siblings got together. It was fun to see the siblings that I had heard about so many years before. He was a good friend and I'm so grateful that I got to have him in my life. Rest in peace Sammy.

My deepest condolences to Eddie and his family over the loss of Sammy. What a funny guy who fired up a room whenever he walked in. Sammy was also the best dressed man I ever knew while in college. Slacks and button down shirts always with his initials embroidered on his shirts...pure class! He was a beloved SAE fraternity member and will be missed.
