Phyllis Souers

Phyllis Souers, 89, formerly of Estes Park and Santa Barbara, Calif. died April 5, 2011 in Denver. Phyllis Howell was born May 2, 1921 in Omaha, Neb. Her parents were George and Katharine(Davenport) Howell.

She attended West Lake College for Girls and Holmby College, both in Bel Air, Calif. She married Marshall "Jerry" Souers in Des Moines, Iowa on June 3, 1950. Phyllis acted in several movies and radio drama shows for MGM and Warner Bros. She was a standin actress for Betty Davis and worked with the likes of Joan Blondell, Erroll Flynn, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. She competed with Elizabeth Taylor for a role in National Velvet and a role as Roy Rogers` riding partner. In 1987, Phyllis and Jerry moved to Estes Park where she was involved in Junior League, PEO, Estes Park Craft Group, Community Bible Study. She was a camper and counselor at Cheley Camp. The couple moved to the Samarkand at Santa Barbara in 1998. Jerry died on Sept. 11, 2006. Phyllis later moved to Covenant Village in Colorado in November 2010 to be near her family. She is survived by her daughter Kathy Vasilik of Westminster; two grandchildren, Caroline Smith and Dennis Vasilik and six great-grandchildren, David, Chris, Kyle, Rebecca, Rachel and Natalee. Her niece Robin Mason Kirk also survives. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter Linda, a son David and her sister, Janice Howell Mason. A graveside service was held Saturday April 9 at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens.
