I miss Joyce´s presence in this world. I live out west now and ski regularly at our Nordic trails in Eagle and downhill at Beaver Creek and Vail. Joyce would have loved it. I carry her spirit with me whenever my skis hit the trails.

Thinking of Joyce this past week while skiing at Vail, Colorado. I can picture Joyce making turns in the back bowls smiling all the way down!

As the former race director of the PA. Nordic Championship ski race sponsored by the Pa Cross Country Skiers Association, I had quite a few conversations with Joyce over the years at our races. She was always positive, upbeat and optimistic, regardless of the weather and course condition. She was unfailingly complimentary, and always thanked me at days end. I'll never forget the call we had the night before the 2005 race when she asked if the race was still on (it was raining and getting warm). She was travelling from Erie with some friends in the morning and wanted to be sure the race was still on). I told her yes, no problem. A few hours after that call, I was called by our course maintenance man, who was standing in water with a dead battery of the trail groomer, bemoaning the fact that it was raining really hard. The next morning when Joyce arrived for the race I told her what had happened, and all the problems we faces to get the trail groomed. We had a good laugh about it all....she skied the race with her usual verve and elan. Here are the race times for Joyce in ore PA Nordic Race.....

Joyce was a good friend and an inspiration to me, as well as to so many others. “Amazing” is an appropriate attribute. Her age was never an issue. She jumped into sports with gusto and courage, always upbeat, always trying her best. And her best was terrific. I loved biking and x-country skiing with her. She was forever encouraging and complimentary, often focused on others rather than herself. Such a kind lady deserved to live a lot longer. Her “joie d’vive” will stay with me forever.
I live out west now and haven’t seen Joyce in ages, but I treasure my memories of her and always feel grateful that she graced my life. My sympathies to all who loved her.

It was such a blow to hear that Joyce passed . . . more than any amazing person I've know through the QUAD Games and I've known many, she was as bursting with life, energy and resolve as any of them. When she came to an event, just through her determined participation she set the most amazing example for the 8 or 10 year old girls that were riding or skiing or swimming as well as the women in their 20's and 30's who watched this woman in her 60's and 70's bike at a level they could not imagine but now could aspire to. And be sure, there were a whole bunch of men at the QUAD that would raise their game on race day so their time wouldn't be listed slower than Joyce's. Many did not succeed. She was the kind of person a race director dreams of having participate in their event. But better, she was a sweet and caring women with a dazzling smile and contagious enthusiasm. At most every event, Joyce would come over and take a moment to ask about my mother who she knew from years ago. To quote my mother quoting Dr. Seuss, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

Chip, Denise, Donna and Family,
I have so many found memories of your mom, we met at Crandall and Associates selling Real Estate. She introduced me to the Erie Ski Club and from there we went on many ski trips together. We also went down the Grand Canyon on a rafting trip together with Christel and Mitch Willis.
I could not believe it when your mom told me she never did sports as a teenager. She said she use to drive out to Peak n Peak and watch you three ski from the lodge when you were teenagers. One day she said to herself. That looks like fun, and took a lesson.
After that she did so much more, cross country skiing and biking. She was an amazing biker. That is where she left me in the dust because I could not keep up. She was an amazing woman and definitely can say she lived her life to the fullest. She was an inspiration to so many people and will be missed. Hold on to your memories and she will live on in your hearts forever.

We are so sorry to hear about your mom's passing. We will always remember skiing with her at Wilderness Lodge and Hardwood Hills. She was a wonderful coach with the Wildcats, always willing to help where needed and she had a great rapport with the kids. She is missed.
