Kenneth Berlin Obituary

Kenneth R. Berlin, age 70, of Harborcreek, passed away on Thursday, November 15, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Erie, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Erie, on January 29, 1948, son of the late Robert V. and Esma H. (Call) Berlin.

Ken was a 1966 graduate of Harbor Creek High School. He was a Vietnam War veteran, having completed two tours of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Coast Guard. During Ken's second tour of duty, he assisted in the evacuation of Saigon following it's fall. He was employed by the General Electric Co. for 25 years prior to his retirement. Upon his retirement, he was employed as a school bus driver by the Harbor Creek School District and was lovingly known by the students as "Mr. Kenny."

Ken was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where he proudly served as an Assisting Minister. He was also a member of the East Erie Moose Club and Gem City Gun Club. Ken was a long-suffering Cleveland Browns fan. He enjoyed trap shooting and was known by all as the "go-to guy" for not only repairs, but life in general. His passions, however, were his children and grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert E. Berlin; his nephew, Bobby Berlin; and his beloved pet dog, Molly.

Survivors include his beloved wife and love of his life of 50 years, Sally C. (Hopsecger) Berlin; four children: Ken A. Berlin (Rhonda) of Millcreek Township, Pam M. Van Horn (Mark) of Harborcreek, Tom M. Berlin (Beth) of Harborcreek and Andrew V. Berlin of Erie; one brother, Richard Berlin (Ann) of Millcreek Township; five grandchildren: Katie and Mandy Berlin, Abigail Van Horn and Thomas and Claire Berlin; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The Berlin Family wishes to thankfully acknowledge Denny, Tom and Danielle from Great Lakes Hospice, as well as the staff and fifth floor veterans of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, for their loving care of Ken.

Family and friends may call at the Dusckas-Taylor Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 5151 Buffalo Rd. (at Hannon Rd., in Harborcreek Township), on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend the funeral service on Monday at 11 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2025 Eastern Ave. Full military honors will follow the service and will be rendered by the American Legion, Carl Neff Post #571 Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, Ken requested that friends have a beer in his memory and/or make a memorial contribution to Messiah Lutheran Church or to the charity of one's choice. Sally and the rest of the Berlin family, Please except my condolences for Ken's passing. He was one of a kind. I worked with him for many years at GE and also driving school bus. He was always my "go to guy". No matter what the problem he always had a solution for it. He had a great personality and was quite the jokester. I will miss him terribly as I know anyone who knew him will.

Ken, Please accept my sympathy on the passing of your dad. Having lost both of my parents, I know the pain and emptiness you're feeling. Only time will help. Eventually, only the positive memories of your dad will become uppermost in your mind. I'm sorry I couldn't pay my respects personally.
