Nick Panos Obituary

Nick G. Panos Before Starbucks and McDonalds, there was the Panos New York lunch at W. 38th and Washington where the coffee brewed strong like the conversation and the eggs were fresh like the news of the day. Nearly 45 years ago, beneath its neon-bordered rooftop mounted coffee cup, Erie’s first round-the-clock diner showcases one of its most colorful restaurateurs, “Nick the Greek” Panos. Juggling the roles of host and cook, Nick’s colorful banter behind the lunch counter entertained countless customers who waited in line for their hamburgers “to go”, smothered with that special tasty Greek chili sauce â€" six for one dollar. A cup of coffee cost a dime and breakfast was served at any time while the juke box belted out Patsy Cline and The Beatles. Young and old were welcome to sit at his counter, regardless of race, color or creed. Janitors and judges alike filled the booths at noon. Generations of customers crossing that threshold developed into lifelong friends. “A clean place with good food at a good price” makes for a great restaurant, Nick often said. Today, a coffee cup goes empty and the brightly-lit Corinthian columns lining the entrances of Greek-American restaurants across America have dimmed in memory of Nick G. Panos who died of cancer on Sunday, November 5, 2006 at age 78. He was born in Sewickley, Pa. on January 5, 1928 to the late George and Florence Panos originally of Crete, Greece. Having moved to Erie from New Kensington, Pa. in 1946, Nick bought and operated “Nick’s Shoeshine Parlor” at 11th & State St. where he blocked and cleaned hats before entering the restaurant business after an apprenticeship at the Erie Restaurant. The Cretan Diner at W. 26th St. and Brown Ave. launched his career followed by the New York Lunch at 18th & State, Panos New York Lunch at 38th St., Jim & Lee’s Restaurant, The Grecian Key, Papa Nick’s and most recently, The Greeks. Among his business ventures, he owned Panos Vending Company in the sixties. Nick was founder and past-president of the local chapter of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) and a member of the Erie Maennerchor Club. He was a former member of the Southwest Erie Lion’s Club and past member of the Parish Council of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Active in both Democratic and Republican party politics, he was once a locally-elected Republican committeeman. He was the first motorcycle police officer at Presque Isle State Park. Nick was a World War II veteran of the U.S Army having served on the USAT Goucher Victory Medical Ship where he escorted war brides from England to the States. He was also a light, heavyweight boxer on the USAT Arcadia. His passion for boxing continued in life in addition to poker, bingo and crossword puzzles. Nick is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mary Lou Panos; He was the father of sons George Panos (Kim) of Morgan Hill, Calif., Emanuel Panos (Angela) and John Panos (Christine), all of Pittsburgh; He is also survived by brother Angelo Panos (June) of Erie; Stepchildren Ann Schultz (Richard) of Edinboro, Leslie Clifton and John Clifton (Mary Beth), all of Erie, Sister-in-law, Diana Healy, and nine grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters Sophie Kutulakis, Mary Sarris and Katherine Vasilakis. Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., West, 536 W. 10th St. on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend the funeral service there on Friday at 11 a.m. conducted by The Very Rev. Nick's oldest son George just called and informed me of his Dad's passing. I am so sad, yet I am happy for my memories of him and the legacy that he leaves. George and I have been best friends since kindergarten at Hamilton and I grew up with George, his brothers, his wonderful Mom and of course, Big Nick. I'm sure that Rizzo, Galletta, the Christophs and all who knew Nick would agree that Nick was not only very funny and entertaining, but his character and sensitivity certainly were exemplary. Heres to Nick and his legacy.

Nick is probably in Heaven impressing God with his uncanny ability to remember orders faster than a computer, all while smiling and making some kind of smart remark. I know it impressed me when I worked for him in the late sixties. His love for life and food has always been an inspiration to me and countless others.

My family lived near Millfair RD...but my father was always willing to "go the distance" to get Pano's. I spent almost 21 years in Erie; and even when we came back to visit, there was always Pano's. It's kind of a "coming of age" place. Nick knew us as regulars; and my in-laws as well. It may have been "a hole in the wall"...but it was that special place you went to, in order to meet friens and be family. Our hearts and prayers are with all of Nick's family. It is ingrained in my memory as one of the best place to go with my friends. Legends never die...and Nick will always be a legend in
erie. God Bless all of Nick's Family and Fiends..

I
grew up on 25th and Brown Ave near Nick's first restaruant but didn't really
come to know him unti much later in life.

I read his obit and agree that
he was a kind man to all nationalities but that was only part of him.

Nick
provided a safe haven for all gay and lesbiam customers for years at his
bar. He saw us as his "kids" and would always watch over us and remove anyone
who was in "our" bar to hassle us.

I remember him proudly inroducing us
to his new girlfriend, Mar Lou who was equally warm and gracious to all of
us.

I speak for myself but know hundred
of us found acceptnce, understanding,
love and a safe harbor with Nick

I have had the pleasure of dining at Pano's on quite a few occasions, but did not know the history or family very well. However, after reading that beautifully written obituary, a person could easily smell the coffee and hear the conversation in a great Erie landmark with a great citizen. Obviously, the tribute fit the man and he likely would have been proud!

I can tell you exactly where I was when I first fell in love with Erie. It was at the New York Lunch.
Yasou Nick! May your memory be eternal

The memories of this family last a lifetime-- my first Greek burger, my first Greek dance, my first Greek friends... making music with one of the finest people I have ever met-Nick's son George, and always George's dad encouraging us to become who we are--

My sympathy to all the family and to all who knew him and feel this loss.

So sorry to hear abot Nick's passing. I have fond memories of my teenhood at the Panos house, going (with his son George) into the basement sorting through coins looking for valuable ones and gawking at the bubble gumballs, both from his bubble gum machine business. Looking at his beautifully-written obituary brings up so many occupations that are normally single careers for one person--besides a restauranteur, he was a motorcycle officer, politician, boxer, and small business owner! He certainly had a rich set of experiences. The world is poorer without him.

My sympathies go out to the Panos family. Nick will be greatly missed. My father George Kallas (deceased) used to rave about Nick's Greek sauce and considered Nick a personal friend. May Nick's memory live on and may he rest in peace.

I met Nick for the 1st time in the 60's and at the back door of his restraunt. I was working for Lombardi Refuse Co. I remember how Nick would not let us continue on our route until he fixed us a huge breakfast at 4:00 a.m.. He and I turned into good friends over the years as we both got older. I am deeply saddened by his departure. I've lost a great friend!
My Sincere Condolences!

My thoughts and prayers go to the Panos family at this difficult time. My aunt lived on West 36th St behind Grover Cleveland. I remember Panos restaurant growing up in Erie. I ate there after going out in my 20's. I took my now 7 year old there for lunch when we lived in Erie. One of the things my husband and I miss the most is Panos as it was a great place to get a good meal and see lots of friends. Mr. Panos death is a loss to the Erie and greater national community. I felt pain in my heart when I read that Nick Panos passed away. I have so many vivid memories of going to Panos at all hours and enjoying the food, people, atmosphere, etc. My sympathies go to his family....not easy to lose a loved one. Remember, time does not necessarily heal your wounds, but it WILL make it easier to remember. Please know how much we care.
