Dorothy Barnes Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Dorothy Lee Henderson Barnes, 82, of Fayetteville, passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Mrs. Barnes was born June 1, 1930, in Great Falls, Mont., to Joseph Nunn Henderson and Opal Fish Henderson. Surviving Mrs. Barnes are her two children, Susan Louise Barnes Thomas and husband Sam H. Thomas Jr. of Fayetteville, and David Rolland Barnes and wife Nancy True of Gilbert, Ariz.; siblings, Loyal "Bud" Henderson and wife Betty of Missoula, Mont., Gary "Hap" Henderson and wife Georgia of Denver, and Josephine Henderson Jones of Seattle; five grandchildren, Natalie Cromartie, Christian Lamprecht, Sam H. Thomas III, Courtney Barnes and Austin Barnes; and three great-grandchildren, Mason Cromartie, Salley Cromartie and Evan Cromartie. Mrs. Barnes, known as Dottie, had a wonderful smile that could light up a room, and she touched the lives of many with her love, kindness and gentle spirit. She loved gardening, flowers and sharing stories of her childhood on a cattle ranch in Montana. The ranch was located close to a very small town, Big Sandy, where even now there are only a few paved streets. The locals knew her as Chub, a nickname her Dad gave to her as a child. Life in Big Sandy was simple, and street dances were one of the highlights for the young and old. Chub was a cheerleader in high school and completed a degree in medical technology. She married a young Air Force officer, Bud Barnes, and gave birth to a daughter, Susan Louise Barnes, and a son, David Rolland Barnes. Some of her achievements in life were growing huge delicious tomatoes and prize-winning African violets, becoming a real estate broker and joining her husband's hobby as a ham radio operator. Dottie loved dressing up with all the accessories to match and enjoyed being in the center of family gatherings and activities with friends. She never knew a stranger and she considered her friends as family. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Graveside services will follow in Main Post Cemetery on Fort Bragg. Arrangements for the family are entrusted to Rogers and Breece Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
