Janet Hartig Obituary

Janet Hartig (née Kramer), a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 22nd, surrounded by her loving family. Born Janet Eleanor Kramer on August 21, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, she grew up in Rockville Centre, NY, with her parents Kathryn and Bill. It was in Rockville Centre that she met Bob Hartig, the love of her life. Janet pursued her passion for art at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she earned a teaching degree. She devoted her career to nurturing young artistic talent and sharing her love for art. Her family treasures the many paintings she created, which adorn their homes.
Janet stayed home to raise her children and once her children reached school age, Janet began her teaching career in the Cherry Hill, New Jersey school system, where she taught art at Beck Middle School, Heritage Middle School, and Cherry Hill East High School.
Janet was perhaps most renowned and proud of her 48-year journey of sobriety, which inspired her career shift to become a Substance Abuse Counselor. Her commitment to educating families, supporting treatment, and helping addicts transition to fulfilling and joyful lives stood among her greatest achievements. The impact of Janet's work is immeasurable, as she tirelessly aided families dealing with addiction and recovery on a daily basis. Throughout her life, she sponsored countless individuals. She often remarked, "Aside from my family, sobriety was the greatest gift I was given in life," and she used this gift to help countless others.
Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert (Bob) Hartig, on April 5, 2025. They married on July 9, 1960, and their union was blessed with four children: Susan Curran (Mark), Nancy Mandes, Diane Snowden (Steve), and Robert Hartig, Jr. Janet was a devoted and playful grandmother to Sean Curran, Caitlin Curran, Meghan Pierce (Cliff), Sarah Mandes, Alexa Mandes (Eric), Gage Panno, Morgan Snowden, Riley Snowden, Kathryn Hartig, and Ryan Hartig. She also experienced the joy of being a great-grandmother to Graham and Hampton Pierce, Tanner Mandes, and Payton Fisher. Janet was preceded in death by her parents (Kitty and Bill), and daughter-in-law (Bev Hartig), aunt and uncles, and cousins,
Janet's life was marked by her deep sense of faith, duty, commitment to family, and keen intellect. She remained sharp and engaged until her passing. Her legacy continues through the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends, all of whom she was immensely proud of and deeply connected to.
Janet will be profoundly missed by all who knew her. The family is grateful for the love and support received during this difficult time. A Funeral Mass to honor Janet's life will be held on Thursday, July 17th, at 11:00 am at St Michael's Catholic Church, 201 North 4th Street, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034. A reception will follow immediately at Walker's Landing at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation (main entrance), Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.
