Charles Ahner Obituary

Ahner Jr., Charles W.

Charles W. Ahner Jr, age 86, of Fond du Lac, died Sunday, May 7, 2017 surrounded by his family at St. Agnes Hospital. He was born on July 28, 1930 in Fond du Lac, the son of Charles William Ahner Sr, and Genevieve (Ollerman) Ahner. He graduated from Fond du Lac Senior High School in 1948 and was a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Madison and proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He married the love of his life Sandra M. Murray on December 29, 1962.

Upon graduating from UW Madison was employed by AC Nielsen, Mercury Marine, Fond du Lac County Deputy Sheriff Reserve, Nichols Transportation where he drove many people throughout the country making friends along the way and always being invited along to the festivities. The second love of his life was waterfowl and waterfowl hunting which he passed on to his son Robert, and grandsons, Forrest and Ethan. He was an avid trap shooter, shooting up until just a few short years ago while still being a top gun. Chuck enjoyed traveling to all fifty states and Europe with his wife Sandy, big band music, reading, The History Channel, and World War II. Seeing his children and grandchildren, great-grandsons, and friends always made him smile and forever wanted people to stay, talk, and enjoy each other's company. Chuck was a man's man. He was larger than life and he would give you the shirt off his back. He didn't have an enemy in the world and was always there for his family. He took on the courageous role of legal guardianship of his two young brothers-in-law along with his wife.

Charles was instrumental in starting the Hunter Safety Program in Fond du Lac. He carved decorative decoys and birds. He belonged to many organizations including, Wescot Sportsman's Club, Forest Sportsman's Club, Eagles Aerie #270, Knights of Columbus Council #664, Ducks Unlimited, the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association, and received many awards throughout his life for contributing so much to the community and youth, and was a foster parent and role model.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-four years Sandy; daughter Kathleen (Blaise Huberty) Gill; son, Robert Ahner; grandchildren, Alexandra (Nick Shea) Gill, Forrest Ahner, and Ethan Gill; twin great-grandsons, Dylan and namesake Charlie, all of Fond du Lac; brother Richard Ahner of Stoughton; brothers-in-law, Steven Murray of Waukesha, David Murray of the Netherlands, Holland; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, and his dog Tilly. He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Verda and Edward Murray; brother, Ronald Ahner; and numerous other family members.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 11, 2017 from 1-6 PM at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 N. Park Ave, Fond du Lac, WI, 54935. A funeral service will follow at 6 PM at the funeral home. Cremation will follow the service and interment will take place at Rienzi Cemetery. Trier-Puddy American Legion Post #75 will conduct military honors at the funeral home.

The family wishes to thank the Fond du Lac EMT's and St. Agnes Hospital ER for their excellent care and compassion. Chuck will be forever loved, cherished, and remembered with a smile.
