Peter Kymalainen Obituary
Peter A. Kymalainen, Sr. ("Paavo") passed away at home on September 22, 2023. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and public servant to the city of Fitchburg for many years. Peter was born on January 31, 1946 in Fitchburg, MA.
He is predeceased by his beautiful and beloved wife, Joan (Barber) Kymalainen.
He is survived by his loyal son, Peter A. Kymalainen, Jr., of Fitchburg; his devoted daughter, Jennifer (Kymalainen) O'Leary Tait and her husband, Bruce Tait, of Northborough; his former son-in-law, Timothy J. O'Leary, of Marlborough; and three beloved grandchildren: Thomas, Katherine, and Joseph O'Leary.
He is predeceased by his older brother, William Kymalainen of Fitchburg.
He served the City of Fitchburg as a Police Officer and Police Detective, protecting and serving others, with an honorable 36 year career. He retired in 2011. He valued his colleagues at the department and was a true "cop's cop." He reminded daughter Jennifer every day: " Study hard; make me proud!" He was proud of his son Pete's career at the Sheriff's Department. He was an avid sports fan, especially the Red Sox, and he also enjoyed car shows.
He previously served in the US Army and was Honorably discharged in 1972. He was a graduate of Fitchburg High School. He was the son of Arthur and Mary (Bianchini) Kymalainen of Fitchburg.

My memory of Pete, I was a young (very young officer) I remember one of the first times in uniform working of all things a parade. He came up to me and introduced himself and from that moment on we were friends and partners working west Fitchburg and Cleghorn. He was a mentor to me and taught me how to be an effective officer. I will always remember his catch phrase "Stick with me kid" ! Well I did! And now my friend
it is time for you to rest in peace. I will always grateful for your guidance and friendship.

I remember Pete coming to the hospital many times to clean many of our cars off after snowing so Joannie and her co- workers didn't have to deal with it after work. You were so thoughtful and our hero! Thanks Pete!

Paavo thanks for your guidance when I was 1104 and you were 1102 all those years ago. Many great memories working with you and knowing you. You taught me a lot. Thanks for the "Pepsi" when I was working the detail on River St. Rest In Peace . Glad we were able to go to some of the retiree get togethers. My thoughts and prayers go out to your children and your family!
