Gary Gates Obituary

Gary P. Gates June 25, 1941 - July 14, 2010 Putnam - Gary P. "The Baron" Gates, 69, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. Gary was born June 25, 1941 in Putnam, Connecticut to Denton and Helen (Kimball) Gates. Until recently, he was a lifelong resident of Putnam. In his youth, he was associated with 4-H Camp for many years. Gary attended Putnam High School and was a member of the Putnam Clippers Football Team. He remained a devoted fan, very proud of never missing a Thanksgiving Day game. After graduating from high school, he joined the Connecticut Army National Guard. After his term in the Guard, he returned to Putnam full of ideas and ambition. Gary's return began the whirlwind of his very active life. The "car business" was blessed with him at a very early age. His handsome smiling face became well known at Beausoleil Buick, Delaney Ford, Lester's Garage and many other used car headquarters. His grasp of selling was unmatched; his magnetic personality incomparable, his love of a good time infectious. All these winning attributes allowed him to effortlessly achieve numerous awards for sales at Cargill Chevrolet in Putnam under the reign of Dick Perrin, including induction into the Legion of Leaders for Top Sales for Chevrolet on the East Coast. But he did not stop there; his zest for excitement took him to yet another venture…livestock. He attended all the livestock auctions, anything that would provide the thrill of wheeling and dealing. He would buy cattle, horses, even goats in the south and ship them back to Connecticut for meat packing and export overseas. His export meat business won him an appearance on the popular Mike Douglas Show. It was at that time "The Baron" was crowned. Gary was no average man, quick to laugh and even quicker to smile, no one could stay mad at him for long. At times, he may have bit off more than he could chew, but always came out smelling like a rose. In later years he bought and sold property, equipment and the ever present used cars; continuing his skillful sales techniques at Deals On Wheels, RPM Enterprises, Danny's Auction Barn, Wilson's Auto, Gates GMC Nissan and numerous other locations and businesses. The Wheeler and Dealer was happiest in the heart of a frenzied auction of any type, easily recognizable in his pressed jeans and cowboy boots. He loved his new Cadillac and went riding in it just days before his passing. The Baron was a fighter, continuing to wheel and deal on his cell phone and fought to the end. The fighting is over now; he is at peace with the friends who went before him, and his beloved dog Max. He faced it all, Stood Tall, and did it his Way. Gary is survived and will be sadly missed by his Mother, Helen Gates of Danielson; Soul mate and best friend Louise Law of Putnam; Children: Craig Gates and his wife, Cindy of Columbia; Brian Gates and his wife Ulrika of Mystic; Natalie (Gates) Frettoloso and her husband Richie of Parkland, FL; Angela (Gates) Hutchens and her husband Thayne of Hampton, CT and Nicole Law of Oxford, MA; Grandchildren: Gina, Denny, Eric, Emma, Tomas, Madeleine, Dente, Vincent and Thayne; Brothers: Lance Gates of South Killingly and Douglas Gates of Aurora, CO; Numerous nieces and nephews; Longtime friends Geoff Wheaton, Jimmy Cross, Bob Marion, Bob Tindall, Tommy Collins and many more, too many to mention but they know who they are; Last but certainly not least Great Grand Dogs: Champ and Lex. He was predeceased by his father, Denton Gates; his brother, Dennis Gates; and his sister, Sandra Gates-Galetti. There will be no calling hours. As per Gary's wishes, a Celebration of his life will be held at Putnam Chrysler Dodge Jeep Kia, 157 Providence Pike, Putnam, CT, Sunday, July 25, 2010. Gary and his family invite friends to join them. A Military Funeral Honors Ceremony as well as special tributes to The Baron will be held promptly at 3:00 pm. Beverages and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Smart Casual Attire. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the 4H Camp & Outdoor Center in Abington. Donations can be mailed c/o Craig Gates, P.O. I purposely waited until August 16th to make an entry in this guestbook. Thought it was kind of fitting since today is the 33nd anniversary of Elvis's Death. There are so many parallels between The Baron and Elvis: Looks, Charm, Talent, Generosity and Last but not Least-Both taken from us way too soon. May you rest in peace Baron, we will Miss You. Have The King sing his version of "My Way" for you! Til we meet you again...

Denny & I were about 5 years old and we were shooting our BB guns at Gary's house. Gary, the Old Farmer that he was, came up to us with a shotgun and asked: "Which one of you thinks you can shoot this?" Of course Denny was right there to do it, so not to be outdone, I HAD to do it. It knocked me right over. I will never forget it. The two of us had matching bruises on our shoulders for about a week! My Mother was so mad at Gary...but rest easy Gary, I think she's over it by now!

Baron,

You are the one person I've known that could sell a pair of shoes to a man with no legs, over charge him and have him say thank you.... May your smile and possitive, joyful personality be remembered by all. You brought Joy and Laughter you many over the years...
Hope the people up there where you are going left their wallets at home !!!!!!!!!

Rest in peace my friend..

Having been at Gates GMC Nissan for almost 5 years, I had the honor to meet "The Baron" less than a handful of times. In an industry where you meet a number of people on a daily basis, few actually make a true impression on us. For me, The Baron stood out from the crowd just by the nature of his smile. I can vividly see it to this day. It was the smile of a gentleman with a hint of the presence of a "Cheshire Cat Grin", if he was not up to something at the time, you could bet he was going to be up to some fun quite soon. If someone can stand out having just been met a few times, it is immeasurable how he must have been with those in his circle on a daily basis. There is no doubt he is one of the greats and will be missed. Luckily his memory will be kept alive by those who called him family and friend. Farewell Baron, no doubt the Gates of Heaven graciously opened when you took your journey home.

Gary and I spent many hours working and playing together in our teen years. He was a natural wheeler dealer even then.He would contract jobs, then put me, Jerry Clark, Norm Tessier, and Dodie Steinbrick to work. I spent many hours and weekends at the Gates house with Gary and his wonderful family.
I am sorry I didn't get to see him
in recent years but I never forgot him.
My love and condolences to the Gates Family.

To Craig, Denny, Brian and the whole Gates family I extend my deepest sympathy. He was a wonderful guy and always had a compliment for the ladies. I remember when Tiny passed he was one of the first to call and ask if I needed anything. I've never forgotten that. They must be telling car stories together and having a drink and a cigar right now. He will be sadly missed.

I graduated with Gary, but unfortunately, had not seen much of him since then. Once bought a new Chevy from him, though. While reading the obit, I had to laugh at the tales of his "wheeling and dealing". On one of the many occasions when he was late for class, his excuse was that he had found a coil of rope that had apparently fallen from a truck. He was late because he had taken the time to find a buyer before he came to school. I believe he also had a similar situation involving a pig. Our Drafting teacher, Mr. Gerard, did his best to counsel Gary and advise him that he needed to stop skipping classes. Gary replied that "This school business is interfering with my education!"
Gary may have enjoyed his Caddy during his last days but I know during High School, he and his friends enjoyed a beautiful black '56 Chevy with a Continental Kit and a Power Pack slim block as he tooled down Woodstock Avenue.
Great days. God Bless, my friend.

My heart goes out to all of you. Even though I had not seen Gary for many years, having spent so many of my teenage years at the "Gates ranch", I will always think of him as my older brother and dear friend. I can't think of him without smiling. He surely was a character and had a huge heart! I know he will be sorely missed by all. My love to each and every one of you!

Gary and I were early friends as we both attended a one room school in So. Killingly. When he and family moved to Putnam, we didn't remain as close. Never will I forget the summer he hired me and several other teen age friends to go to New Hampshire to bale hay for a customer that Gary had contracted with. We all learned what hard apple cider was all about that summer. I think Gary still owes me for my services for that venture....Gary, R.I.P., my life long friend...the books are cleared!!!
