Elise Layson

Elise Layson, 99, of Fish Lake, LaGrange, IN, died March 28, 2024, at Cedarhurst of Fort Wayne.

She was born in Hampton, South Carolina, on June 8, 1924, to Charles Eugene and Ollie (Corbin) Sauls.

Elise would grow up in the south and in 1944, she enlisted in the Navy. She served during World War II from July of 1944 to May 22, 1946.

On June 2, 1946, she married Francis R. Layson in St. Augustine, Florida. He would precede her in death on June 8, 2000.

Elise would move north after her wedding and live for many years in the Fort Wayne area. While living in Fort Wayne she would raise her two children and she enjoyed volunteering at a nursery school. In 1975, she and Francis would move to Fish Lake in LaGrange County, IN. She would remain there until the spring of 2023.

She was an active member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church and enjoyed attending the weekly bible study class.

Surviving is a daughter, Sandra (Ahmet) Mecuk; and a son, Jeffrey (Deb) Layson both of Ft..Wayne, IN.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson; and a sister, Daggy Goette of Savannah, GA.

Preceding Elise in death were her parents; her husband, Francis; five sisters, Bessie Clark, Ollie Clark, Mary Smith Judy Moseley and Brenda Collins; and a brother, Charles E. Sauls.

The Rev. Dana Stonebraker will officiate the services and burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, LaGrange, IN.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 797 N. Detroit St., LaGrange, IN 46761.

A viewing will take place at the church before the service on Wednesday from 12 p.m. until service time of 2 p.m. Memorials may be directed in Elise's memory to the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church or the Heart-to-Heart Hospice.
