Peter Wentworth Obituary

SANFORD, Maine - Peter R. Wentworth, 61, of Sanford, died unexpectedly after suffering a heart attack during his morning run while vacationing in Montana on Sunday, September 11, 2016.

Peter grew up in Somersworth and attended local schools, graduating from Somersworth High School. In 1985 he married Barbara Consolo and together they shared nearly 31 years of marriage and raised two children.

Peter worked as a police officer for the City of Portland for over 20 years before retiring as a Lieutenant in 2008. Never one to sit idle, Peter soon went to work for the Biddeford Police Department where he had been a detective for the past eight years. He was very proud to be a police officer and was a certified polygraph operator. Peter ate, slept and breathed police work and loved his career in public service.

Peter liked running, biking, kayaking and spending time outdoors. He loved to travel with his wife and his family. They had recently taken two biking trips through Austria and Germany and to Spain. He was also an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. Peter will be remembered as a kind and loving man who was devoted to his family and dedicated to protecting and serving the public. He will be dearly missed.

Peter was predeceased by his parents.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Wentworth of Sanford; two children, Katherine and Dan Wentworth, both of Sanford; four siblings, Susan Brown and her husband Norm of Sandown, New Hampshire, Marc Wentworth and his wife Sandra of Barrington, New Hampshire, Lisa Jansen and her husband George of Rollinsford, New Hampshire and Kathy Bridges and her husband Kevin of Wells; his mother and father –in-law, Elaine and Carmen Consolo of Avon Lake, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Visitation will be held at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale from 2-6 p.m., on Sunday, September 18. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m., on Monday, September 19.

Pete was by far the most capable and intellegent police liaison I worked with in my 22 years at DHHS. He'd take if dinner time at our house and we'd have pizza and fries, and a lot of fun. And he was an A+ Detective who had a great gut instinct. Miss him......

I worked with Pete for about 21 years at the Portland Police Dept. He was a great guy as everyone already knows. He was always up front about what was on his mind and he was as dependable as the day is long.. Most people know how much he enjoyed his career and how dear he held his family. I had a few conversations over the years with Pete and one that really sticks out is when he decided to turn down the promotion he was given at PPD because it would have meant a loss of time with Barb, Kate and Dan. He ended up getting the promotion at a later date and he continued on in his career..but he took the time he thought was most important and spent it with his family. He was a great friend and colleague-he will be greatly missed. Heartfelt condolences to Barb, Dan and Kate.
