Stephen Freeman Obituary

Stephen Freeman

Stephen "Steve" Freeman, age 57, died on Friday, November 14th after suffering traumatic injuries from a bicycle accident in Georgetown, Colorado. His dry wit, charisma, charm, creativity and generosity will be missed.

Steve was a lifelong resident of New England and had recently moved to Colorado. Raised in Rochester, N.H., he attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School. A cherished memory was being part of the St. Thomas football team that following two winless seasons, upset a heavily favored Bishop Guertin team 8-7 in the state championship. Many opponents from that game went on to become close friends. Steve continued playing football with a full scholarship to The College of the Holy Cross where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. He developed a deep bond with high school classmates recently stating, "After all these years, I still bleed STA blue." He was named Distinguished Alumni of the Year in 2005 and inducted into the inaugural class of the "Hall of Honor" in 2010 for athletic and academic achievements and service to both the community and school. In his youth, where he went, chaos typically followed. With buddies Soapee, Raymo, Butch, Fabes, Gilly, Poulis, Hurls and too many others to list, you may not have known they were coming, but you remembered they were there.

Steve began a career in the insurance and financial services industry with Prudential in 1980 under the tutelage of the great, Ron Lachapelle. As a sales manager, Stevehelped numerous trainees cut their teeth in the insurance industry. He was responsible for supervising as many as 50 representatives at one time and spent many evenings at kitchen tables throughout the Seacoast. He continued his financial services career raising a family in Hampstead, N.H. and working with Waddell and Reed, National Life of Vermont, and Mass Mutual. He was the owner of Appletree Insurance and recently served as the President of Transitions Financial, a firm dedicated to coaching and recruiting financial advisers.

Steve lived an open door life striving to help others. It started with his upbringing living in a small house where his parents did not own a key to lock the door. Each day involved friends lounging on the couch and often staying for dinner. Whether he was coaching kids in a youth basketball, baseball or soccer league, training a new sales rep, or donating his time to a charity, he derived great happiness from the success and smiles of others. He was a two time recipient of the Louis Dublin Award for Community Service from the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. He believed that to those whom much was given, much was expected. He worked closely with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Special Olympics, and the March of Dimes.

Steve is the son of the late Lawrence and Ann Freeman. He is survived by two children, Matthew and Lauren Freeman of the Greater Boston area, and Deborah Freeman of Manchester, N.H. Family includes sisters Cheryl Porelle of Howell, N.J., and Lisa Freeman of Georgetown, Colo., brothers John and Jim Freeman and Jim's wife Cheryl of Georgetown, Mass., nephews Andrew and Adam Freeman, nieces Jordan Porelle, Julianne and Linda Freeman, and numerous aunts and uncles including George Freeman, the running legend of Cobleskill, N.Y.

Family, friends and others are invited to the R.M. Edgerly& Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. in Rochester, N.H. on Sunday, November 23 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to reminisce, grieve, support, and of course sharewar stories of a full life cut short. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 24th, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 71 Lowell St., Rochester, N.H. Rather than flowers, Steve would have preferred you do an unexpected, unsolicited act of kindness. If creativity eludes you, donations may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, 814 Elm St. #300, Manchester, N.H. 03101

Freemo : You were larger than life! Never have I met a person who squeezed more out of life than you did. You dodged death and disaster so many times and lived life with the throttle wide open. Compassion and humor were your trademarks and nary a person ever had a bad word to say about you. You were truly one of a kind. I was looking forward to our trip to stay with you in April but I guess that will have to wait now. I will miss you and wish we had more time together to re-live the days at HC and blaze new trails in CO. I will never forget that smile. Keep smiling Freemo!!!

I'm crushed by the loss of Free. He was the best friend you could ever hope to have and I feel lucky to have been close to him for over 40 years. He cut a wide swath wherever he went and if you met him chances are you never forgot him. He always gave more of himself than he asked for in return and will be remembered for that by many people who benefitted from his love and generosity. RIP my dear friend.

We were shocked and saddened to learn of Steve's passing. We could always count on Steve, whether it was coaching our kids traveling team, setting a pick underneath in the Hampstead Men's BBall league or helping us remove a refrigerator from a second story apartment when everyone else ran for the hills. He had a great sense of humor and a balanced set of values. You will be missed buddy!

I was so very sad to hear of Steve's passing.I enjoyed my time working with Steve at National Life both as a colleague and a friend. The Yankee lamp he gave to my son when he was born thirteen years ago, still stands on his bureau and is used every night. To Deb, Matthew, and Lauren, as well as all of your family and friends, I am sorry for your loss. We were all a little better for having known Steve and had him a part of our lives.

November 23, 2014

I was so saddened to hear about Steve's passing. We just reconnected a couple of months ago and had some really great and intimate conversations about God... about life... about making a difference. I know he loved his family, loved his friends, and especially loved to talk about the old times at STA. He was a leader extraordinaire, but also loved to serve others and his community. Freeemo - we love you and miss you already. Cheryl and family - my heart is with you. I'm praying for you as I write. I'm out of the country and won't be able to attend the celebration of his life today. Know that I wish I could be there to share this time with everyone.

Inclusive, motivating, encouraging, witty, and smart are words that help describe the man, the person, the classmate, that was Steve.
The Hill, Moe's, ice fishing, and road trips to nowhere are places visited and shared.
Many memories and much laughter. I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared what I will take forward as some of the best times of my life. Thank you Steve for being at the forefront of those memories which I shall always cherish.

God Speed and God Bless.

Dear Freeman Family:
Steve touched all of our lives, let there be no doubt...I was a few years behind Steve, before I had to transfer, but was right behind him, when trying to run up & down the 'HILL' daily, after our football practices. When you were just about ready to pass out cold, moaning & almost crying from that big, bad, overpowering hill, Steve would turn & say, or do something that would just make you LAUGH, giving you the burst of strength to make your way to the top...He motivated you. The PEP rallies, before each game, were so good that they should have been on TV! It was this time of year too, fond memories...May God Bless You Steve...& Thanks for the memories...!

Words cannot express the way I felt when I was told that Steve had passed away! It still seems to me to be a bad dream and I will wake up at any momment and everything will be back to normal. Steve was a classic individual with a witty sense of humor and a positive attitude. I will always think of Steve in that manner. My thoughts and prayers are with Steve and the family.

November 21, 2014

A beautiful obituary that captures the life, heart, humor and complexity of a true original. Steve lived life out loud, giving everything his all and always giving of himself to others. He had so many talents – the intellect, athleticism, magnetism, wit and incredible grasp of language. His insights in Fr. Sobs English class, his brilliance and antics at the board in honors calculus, his songs, his speeches, his true friendship….unforgettable. He so loved his family and friends and we all loved him. Even in death, he brings us together. Peace, Steve.

My condolences to the Freeman family. Steve was a good man with a big heart. A leader on as well as off the field. I had lost touch with most of '75 alumni but recently via "Facebook" been chatting with Steve. We talked about STA days, "the hill", easy Ed Turcott, and the rowdy songs we used to sing while tossing back beers.... Was not prepared for this as I'm sure none of us were. I'll miss you buddy but you're in good hands now, I'm sure of it.... RIP

For the Freeman family, you were all such a huge part of my life growing up in Rochester. Your Mom pulling out the tv trays when we would come in on a cold night , making us soup and sandwiches.Always felt at home.An old Irish saying- Death leaves a hole in your heart that will not heal, but love leaves a memory no one can ever steal. Steve will be missed but never forgotten.

Our love and sympathy to Steve's sisters and brothers,to Deb and his children. I last saw Steve 4 yrs ago. I was at Paul Thompson's funeral. It was a quiet moment and something hit me in the back. I turned around sternly to find Steve, holding a cane and a wicked grin.( gout attack). I think he got away with murder because of that grin, and twinkle in his eyes. Even at STA I new that Steve was a brilliant student and stellar athlete. He was a complex guy with an unexplained magnetism. I can't think of David Bowie, or Ziggy, without thinking of Freeman. I wish I could be with you all next weekend, to share stories, tears and laughter. So hug each other and know that Peter and I will be there in spirit.
