First of all, I had no idea my good friend passed away until this day. I was actually in the process of looking for his phone number and browsed his name - only to find him here posted since August 1. I just missed him before I could anything. But I will share my thoughts. You see during my initial stages at work back in 2012, I was not treated very well. And as I stood at my duty station, Mr. Yingling stood with me often to engage in great conversation. Ever since that day, he was my good friend. And every time I saw him, he shared knowledge and wisdom just as an uncle or Grandfather would do. I deeply valued him. And I can't think of anyone who did not think highly of Mr. Yingling. We often discussed his love for God and how he knew God was a big part of his life. Well, what I can see is that God used him to show tremendous support and kindness to others. A true blessing he was to many... I am deeply saddened over this loss.
Take Care My Friend,
Floyd Brown II

Diane, Jim and I are so sorry for your loss. I didn't find out until Thursday when I talked to Jerry. Vernon was a great man to work for and will always be remembered as one of our best clients, and for the stories he would share with us. Also for the Krispy Creme donuts he would bring every time he would come to the office.
Our condolences

To Diane, We are so sorry for not seeing Vernon"s obituary. This is such a sad bit of info. Vernon was one of the best people we have had the opportunity to speak of with such delight. How much we loved all the times we had with your family, the Church Class, the picknics at your house and all other times. He was indeed a true friend. Diane, we miss seeing you and our prayers are there for you and your family. A true friend always! Walter and Pat Wratchford

Trudy and I knew Vernon for 20 years. We wish it was longer. He was a fair, honest, faithful friend who understood people and loved everyone. He understood the world and only wanted it better. He knew the Lord and was a dedicated servant. We are all diminished by his passing but enriched by having shared a part of his life.
I will always remember how his face brightened and his posture improved when he played golf, spoke of God’s hand in his life and when he told stories of his precious Diane.
Rest In Peace my friend. Gene & Trudy

Diane and family,
Vernon was always special. He and I went through the old Urbana Elementary School together and there are so many memories. I especially remember the square dancing in Baker Park. We were in the same "square" and made our sit-upons for the big day. He was always a happy and friendly soul. I really enjoyed sharing time with him and Larry Hopwood at the 50th reunion of the class of '63. It was great to visit with them.
Diane, you and Vernon seemed like the best married couple since "Leave it to Beaver". You were definitely meant for each other.
My sincere sympathy on the passing of a wonderful guy,
Kaye (Weatherholt) Shoemaker

When Diane called and told me Vernon had a massive heart attack and passed away on the 13th hole at Holly Hills I was crushed.
It brought back so many memories. Vernon and I played a lot of golf together. As a matter of fact that's how I met him, joining Holly Hills. We were a regular group.
Our friendship turned into much more than playing golf. Vernon, Diane, me and my wife Courtney had many meals together.
One of our favorite places was Edgewater Restaurant. I remember Vernon asking me one day if I like crab cakes? My reply was "I love them." Vernon said, " I know where they have the biggest and best. Crab cakes the size of softballs and no filler." He was right on! We made many trips to Edgewater along with anyone who visited us and wanted Maryland crab cakes.
When my wife and I moved to Southport, NC I stayed in touch with Vernon and invited him down many times. I never saw him again.
Vernon loved golf but I believe he used golf as a venue to be with people. That's what he loved. We didn't see eye to eye on some things, politics for instance, however he never used harsh words or tones to express himself. His humor was off the charts. Vernon was who I call a "Gentle Soul."
I will miss him!
I hope Diane will come visit us in Southport and we can laugh and cry while remembering my good friend, Vernon.

Vernon was undoubtedly the most kind human being. His passion for teaching and love of Christ transcended to all who have had the honor of being taught by him. Four years of Sundays being molded by such a great man is a true honor. I pray the Lord puts a "Vernon" in my children's lives. To Diane and family, we feel this great loss with you and will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Vernon was one of the truly nice guys in this world. We were former FHS Classmates and friends. We didn't see much of each other, except at reunions; but he always had a smile for everyone. So kind to everyone. I know he'll be missed by so many, and the world has lost another beautiful soul. Rest in peace my friend.

I met Mr. Vernon May of 2010 he was the Army Corp. Inspector on the job that I was Superintendent on. I worked with him every day till September 2011 about 16 months. The first day I met Mr. Vernon I made the mistake of calling him Vern. I got an ear full and thought to my self this ain’t going to be fun. Could not have been more wrong, you see Mr. Vernon was not your average man, he had compassion, was kind and became a great friend in a short period of time. On December 5, 2011Mr. Vernon called to tell me he had a small stroke, his speech was a little off but still the same old Vernon up beat and not down. He called me again on Christmas Day and I was glad to hear he was much better and could not wait to get out and play golf. Mr. Vernon and I would sit in his office and eat peanuts and talk almost every day. He talked about his kids, grand kids and Mrs. Diane. He was with his grandson when he got his first buck so proud of him and said he made a great shot. He was happy Mrs. Diane was playing golf and was good at it of course he took credit for teaching her. He called me every year on my birthday I don’t even know how he knew the date. When my wife fell ill 2 years ago it wasn’t my friends of 50 years I called it was a man I worked with 16 months and talked to maybe 40 minutes a year for the last 9 years. I knew Mr. Vernon would know what to say and give me advice to help me through this and when he said he would pray for Jackie I knew he actually would. I am grateful I met Mr. Vernon he would not want us to mourn too long he would want his family and close friends to look after the love of his life Mrs. Diane and I know Vernon will always be with us no matter where we are and what we’re doing.
Love you Mr.Vernon

I had the great fortune of working with Vernon for a number of years. More importantly, I had the privilege of becoming his friend. He and Diane were the life of any group: just couple’s or big get-togethers. His wit was quick, and his stories were exceptional. But his kindness, burnished by life’s ups and downs, his wisdom, and his deep concern for others will always be what I remember most. He took me under his wing when I thought I knew a lot, and with both encouragement and gentle but unmistakable critiques he taught me a great deal, including allowing me to see how much I still had to learn. I will miss our annual birthday calls to each other, but I will cherish the many years of them I’ve had since moving away. May God provide great comfort to Diane, Jerry, Steve and the rest of the family. Vernon was truly one of a kind, in the very best way possible.
We love you and will miss you Vern. Love, Kelly, Steve, Alexis, Alains, Dylan and Mollie Grace d

Vernon Yingling was a good person and a great contractor. If you knew Vernon, then you had a story to tell. It was always an adventure to visit a job site with Vernon, Steve Oden, Herb Hahn, and Phil Zimmerman. It was a delight to be with them and their wonderful outlook on life. There was never a dull moment with that group. I loved every minute I spent with them as a young contractor and learning from them.
