DAVID HIPWELL Obituary

David Hipwell was born in Visalia, CA, on May 13, 1937, the oldest child of George and Margaret Hipwell. David passed away on October 12, 2015. David worked at his parents' grocery store, Hipwell's Market, from age nine until he graduated from high school. He attended George McCann Memorial Catholic School from kindergarten through eighth grade, and graduated from Mount Whitney High School in 1955. David enlisted in the United States Navy after high school, and was very proud of his career as a Navy diver. He later graduated from College of the Sequoias with an Associate of Arts degree, and attended Golden Gate University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in 1969, and a Master's degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting in 1971. David worked for Moore Business Forms beginning in 1963, where he started as a materials control expediter. He was promoted seven times, ending as plant accountant before leaving the company in 1979, to become the general manager for Berryfast, where he worked until 1982. He then became an independent sales contractor, and in 1984, started his own promotional sales business. Sales was in his blood and David continued with his sales career until retirement. He began buying rental properties in the 1970's, when he purchased his first property with his brother Charles. David was a member of the Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed reading; debating politics; golfing with his best friend of more than 30 years, David "Bodie" Boltshauser; going to lunch at the senior center with his companion, Madeline Mendonca; being Papa Dave to his grandchildren and great grandchild; having dinner with his daughters, Kathi and Suzanne, every Wednesday night; and dancing the "Hipwell Shuffle," a dance of his own making and, like him, one of a kind. He will truly be missed. David was preceded in death by his parents, George and Margaret Hipwell; his wife of nearly 25 years, Nanci Hipwell; his wife of eight years, Lorna Hipwell; and his nephew Timothy Mulder. He is survived by his two daughters, Kathi Hash, and Suzanne McGuire of Visalia; grandchildren, Jesse McGuire, Matthew Hash, Melanie Hash, and Kyra Hash; great-grandson, Jayden McGuire; sister, Ann Mulder of Los Angeles, CA; brothers, Charles Hipwell of Fresno, Stephen Hipwell of Oakland, CA, and Tommy Hipwell of Florida; nieces and nephews, Jimmy Mulder, Susan Yates, Mary Mulder, Jennifer Mulder and Stephen Mulder; and great-niece, Nikki Yates; and great-nephew, Logan Bonn. A Memorial Luncheon will be held at the Visalia Elks Lodge, 3100 W. Main Street, Visalia, CA, on Sunday, November 1, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 110 W. Main Street, Visalia, CA 93291, or to m.donate. cancer.org.

David and I went to L A in 1958 seeking fame and fortune, We slept in his car at a building site in Beverly Hills, living on bagels and water; sold Cory Cookware to young working girls in downtown LA, moved into a boarding house at the corner of Wilshire and Western. I found a job, Dave returned to Visalia and started dating my old girlfriend. A girl who went to Redwood with my younger sis moved into the boarding house Dave became best man at our wedding, and my son is named David. Ill never forget David, and some of the funniest times of my life shared with him. Tish Thompson
