DORIS SCHWINDT Obituary

Doris Carlyn Schwindt, age 76, of Clovis, CA passed peacefully on Monday afternoon, May 23, 2016. Her passing concluded a 50 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Born on July 15, 1939, in Berkeley, CA, Doris graduated from Alameda High School in 1957. She matriculated at University of California, Davis, where she met her husband Cameron. They married in 1960, and made the move to the valley with their son Jon in 1967. In the 1970's, Doris acted on her desire to attain her Bachelor's degree, returning first to Fresno City College and subsequently California State University, Fresno, graduating in 1983, with a degree in marketing. During the same period, she became active with the Multiple Sclerosis Society, serving an extended tenure on the board of the San Joaquin Valley chapter. She was an avid booster for expanding knowledge of the disease and for improved services and understanding of those burdened by it; patients and family alike. This resulted in her co-authoring a book focused on the impact of the disease on caregivers. She did not shy from her diagnosis, never using it as an excuse. Rather, she willingly shared her experience, regularly returning to Fresno State to speak to and be interviewed by students in Mr. Kimble's Psych 169 class "Psychological Aspects of Physical Disabilities". She regularly insisted that it was not she but her service dog Gabriel that was the true recipient of each invitation. Doris is survived by her husband of nearly 56 years, Cameron Schwindt of Clovis; son, Jon and his wife Janella Davidson; and granddaughter, Rowan all of San Diego, CA; her brother, Loy Wiese of Berkeley, CA; sister, Beth Walker; and nieces, Lynn Menegus, and Carol Garbez of Walnut Creek, CA. A Service will be held at a future date. To honor Doris, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 7472 N Fresno St., Ste. 210, Fresno, CA 93720. http://www.national mssociety.org/Chapters/CAL

My love and prayers go out to you Cameron and the family. I never met Doris or you but she sounds like a very intelligent lady. I have talked to you many times and I know you helped her through her situation. A very true love and relationship you both must have had through all those years of marriage. May God be with you and the family for bearing the loss of such a great lady.

Dearest Cam and Jon-

My heart aches for you, but just
remember, my loves, if there has ever been a truly unquenchable spirit, it was hers. And that spirit will be with you always. No one could have loved you both more, and that kind of love never dies. She was truly an amazing woman. The world is richer because she was in it for a while. Love you.

Dearest Friend, Cameron
It is with heavy heart we sign this memory book for Doris. Throughout the years, you and Doris have always held a very special place in our hearts. Years and miles have not come between the memories we hold so dear. A challenging game of Aggravation, Cold Duck, jokes, celebrations, exchange of thoughts and love. Doris was one hell of a woman! She was strong in so many ways and always fought on to do what she could and never with a word of discouragement. You both were an example of a commitment to each other throughout your life together. So, we send our heartfelt sympathies to you and Jon. We know Doris is still with us through the grace she showed to us all and the strong spirit she exhibited in the way she lived her life. She will be missed. We send our love to you all.
