James Pell Obituary

James Craig Pell passed away on 9/25/19. He is survived by his wife Lynn, his children Shannon, Jennifer and Craig, and Lynn's daughter Stacey, as well as his grandchildren Danica, Noah, Clare, Blake, Jordan and Madison, his sister MaryRita McKay and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Mary Viola, father George Parke and his brother George Pell. After serving his country in the Army, our father began a storied career in law enforcement. After serving as a police officer with the Palo Alto, Oakland and Concord Police Depart-ments, in 1974 he was selected as 1 of 14 successful candidates from a pool of over 2,000 to become a Special Agent with the California Department of Justice. Originally assigned to the Fresno Office of the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, "Hawk" worked under-cover for years before becoming the 1st Special Agent Supervisor of the Merced Mariposa County Narcotics Task Force in the mid-80s. Hawk retired from DOJ/BNE in 1996, but that did not end his service to the law enforcement community as he taught for many years at the Advanced Training Center for DOJ's Division of Law Enforcement, in-structing hundreds of agents in law enforcement techniques. He was also a member of the California Narcotics Officers Association. Hawk was a legend and will be greatly missed not only by his immediate family, but by his DOJ and law enforcement families as well. Our father was generous to a fault, always had the latest technology, toys and gadgets, was a voracious reader, and a big pet lover. His family and friends will remember his life and legacy at a gathering to be held 1/18/20. In lieu of flowers, should you wish to remember Hawk, feel free to make a donation in his name to your favorite pet charity.

The Dart Brothers have left the building. Back in the "good old days" Jim would occasionally team up with another agent in our office to go undercover as the Dart Brothers. Being both tow-headed, Jim's younger brother (Joe Doane) and he played their parts quite convincingly much to the shock and surprise of many an enterprising drug dealer. Jim earned his nickname - "the Hawk" - due to his less than sterling eyesight. Nobody put the "Hawk" on point. You will be missed - buddy - you will be missed. RIP-Hawk-RIP Our deepest condolences to Lynn and family.

Happy birthday Dad. I wish I could talk to you one more time. I wish I could tell you how much I love you, and how Clare and Noah thought G paw was the coolest grandfather ever. I am not surprised to hear from friends around the world about what a legend you were, because you were always bigger than life, a different but unique type of dad. I would not change anything, because you were my dad. I love you, I miss you , Happy birthday G paw

So very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I speak for all of the staff at Dr. Nakashian's office , Jim and his family have been patients for over 30 years and we have come to think of them as our family, as well.
He will be missed terribly, as he had the best sense of humor and always had a great story ,or two for us. There is one thing that comes to mind. ..He put on gloves and a mask and pretended to be the doctor, when he learned one of fellow officers ( who's name I will not mention) came in for an appt. ,
He picked up the drill and started revving it up like a car engine, it was too funny. Jim was truly one of a kind , just a fabulous person. Our deepest sympathies are with , Lynn and his entire family at this sad time.

Jim was my partner while working narcotics for the Concord PD. Watching him work was an education on how the job was supposed to be handled. While undercover he bought drugs from a guy he arrested the previous day. I often think of Jim (aka Punk) and the memories he created. Barry Starkell, Florida

Sending our sympathy and prayers. We recall your family's days in our neighborhood and the MPB school carpools. It was good to read such a nice tribute for your dad's distinguished career and expert skills in law enforcement. We are so sorry for your loss. We learned of this through CPD communications. Love and prayers for your dad, and for all of you.
