Gaffney, S.C. - Earlene Turner Brown, 94, of Gaffney, SC, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Magnolias of Gaffney.
Born in Butler, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Jack H. Turner and Ruth Montgomery Turner.
Earlene grew up on a farm in Mauk, Georgia. She was the first in her family to attend college. She attended Georgia Southwestern Junior College in Americus, GA where she graded papers as part of her scholarship, including a young Jimmy Carter's. During WWII she worked at Lockheed Marietta as a "Rosie the Riveter". She later graduated from the University of Georgia and was a Registered Dietician with the VA Hospital. She married the late Dr. James Edward Brown, Sr. and together ran his orthodontic practice in Augusta, GA. They were married 53 years. She was an excellent cook and loved gardening. She had been a member of First Presbyterian Church of Augusta, GA, then Christ Church in Evans, GA before moving to Gaffney and joining St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her only son, The Reverend James "Bucky" Brown, Jr. and his wife Leslie Neff Brown of Gaffney; niece, Beth Turner Simpson and husband Jim of Alpharetta, GA, nephews, Mark Turner and wife, Donna of Evans, GA, John Turner and wife, Melissa of Huntersville, NC and Carl Turner of Gainesville, GA, and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers Jimmy Turner, Jackie Turner, Douglas Turner and sister Reba Turner.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1600 W. Floyd Baker Boulevard, Gaffney, SC 29341.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 5, 2018 at Westover Memorial Park in Augusta, GA with Dr. John Oliver officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside.
The family is at the home of the Reverend James "Bucky" and Leslie Brown of 135 Coventry Court, Gaffney, SC 29340.
