Jeanne Hatcher Bennett

Jeanne Hatcher Bennett, born October 29, 1942, in Bainbridge, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2026.

She was the beloved daughter of Carson N. and Virginia Rich Hatcher and the oldest of five daughters. From an early age, Jeanne exemplified grace, leadership, and devotion to family qualities that remained constant throughout her life.

A proud graduate of Bainbridge High School, Jeanne continued her education at the University of Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. While at UGA, she was a majorette for the renowned Redcoat Marching Band. A gifted twirler, she proudly performed "between the hedges," carrying herself with poise, talent, and Bulldog spirit. It was also at the University of Georgia that she met the love of her life, Kontz Bennett. The two were married on December 20, 1962, beginning a lifelong partnership grounded in love and faith.

Education was a cornerstone of Jeanne's life. She went on to earn her Master of Education in Special Education from Valdosta State University. Jeanne became a beloved teacher in the Ware County School System, where she dedicated her career to serving students and ultimately retired after many years of faithful service. Her compassion, patience, and belief in the potential of every child left a lasting impact on countless families.

Jeanne was an active and devoted member of First Baptist Church of Waycross. For many years, she faithfully taught the ladies Sunday School class and assisted in the church youth program, investing deeply in the spiritual lives of others.

Her love for her community was evident through her leadership and involvement in the Junior League of Waycross and the Garden Club of Waycross, where she held various offices and generously gave her time and talents.

While Jeanne cherished being a mother, her grandsons and great-grandchildren were truly her pride and joy. She never missed a game, graduation, or special event and was always seen behind the camera, carefully capturing each treasured moment. Her family will forever remember her steady presence, encouragement, and unwavering love. Each Christmas, Jeanne could be found in the kitchen preparing her famous oyster casserole, a tradition that brought warmth and joy to her family gatherings.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carson N. and Virginia Rich Hatcher; her beloved husband, E. Kontz Bennett, Jr.; her son, E. Kontz Bennett III; and her sister, Kathryn Hatcher Carter.

She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Bennett Martin; her grandsons, Mitch Martin (Colleen), Carson Martin (Gracie), and Emory Martin (Jaqui); her six great-grandchildren; and her three sisters, Carol Cochran (Sydney), Barbara Brock (Denny), and Clair Dunlap (Gene).

Jeanne will be remembered for her elegance, her servant's heart, her devotion to education and church, and her deep love for her family. Her life was a beautiful example of commitment, generosity, and grace.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (February 19, 2026) at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday beginning at 1 p.m. at the church.
